North Sydney Girls High School (note that the official name has no apostrophe) is a selective girls' high school in Crows Nest, Sydney. Admission is based entirely on academic results. Usually enrolment takes place for Year 7 as there are few vacancies in upper years. For the last decade, at least 30% of students gained places in the top 1% of the state in the higher school certificate results.[citation needed]. In 2003, Year 12 girls achieved a median UAI of 98.[citation needed].

[edit] History
Founded in 1914 with an enrolment of 194 students, it was originally located on the corner of Hazelbank Road and the Pacific Highway. Over the years, the facilities were extended but by the 1980s, it was felt that the site could no longer meet their needs and years of intense lobbying for better facilities followed. When the government decided to close Crows Nest Boys' High, that facility was transferred to North Sydney Girls and underwent $6 million in renovations and refurbishments. Finally, in December 1993, North Sydney Girls High officially moved to its new accommodations. In 2004, North Sydney Girls celebrated the finished upgrading of their pre-existing library. The Library is now disposing of its Lexicon and Encyclopedia Britannica collection, which will be replaced by upgraded versions on the internet.

[edit] Houses
The houses are:
- Berry (green)
- Board (dark blue)
- Elliott (red)
- Greenwood (purple)
- Grossman (light blue)
- Reid (yellow)
The houses are named after ex-principals of the school.
Each year the school holds athletics, cross country running and swimming carnivals where all houses compete for first place. While winning houses are presented with awards, individual achievements are also acknowledged with ribbons given out for first, second and third place winners.
These carnivals also determine which students will represent the school in the Sydney North Metropolitan Zone carnivals.
Students of the school are encouraged to support their houses during such carnivals by dressing in house colours. Awards are also given to individuals who attend the carnivals with the most creative costumes which contribute to their overall house point tallies.
House support is encouraged from an early stage with such events as the Year 7 House Cup where all first year students compete in house teams in sports such as netball and modified basketball. Year 7 students also traditionally make up the house cheerleading squad for the school sports carnivals.
The winners of the 2006 Year 7 House Cup were the house group "Board" in both netball and a game called chairball.
The running of house meetings and general organisation within each house is conducted by the House Office Bearers which consists of the Sports Captain and Sports Vice Captain; and the respective House Captains, Vice-Captains and Secretaries. These members are Year 11 students who have been elected by students of all grades within their houses and are responsible for representing their house in meetings with the Head of the Sports Faculty.
