Sceptile (ジュカイン? Jukain in original Japanese language versions) is a fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise. It is the final evolution of Treecko, one of the three starter Pokémon of the Hoenn region.

Sceptile's name may derive from the words scepter, denoting royalty, and the word reptile. In this sense, Sceptile is a reptilian "King of the Forest". Its name may also derive from the word scythe, due to the large blade-like leaves on its arms. Its Japanese name originates from jukai (樹海?), literally meaning "a sea of trees" or "abundant leafage".

[edit] Biological characteristics

Sceptile are dark-green, human-sized, theropod-like Pokémon modeled after lizards.

A Sceptile's power is unmatched in the jungle, and they are thus the dominant species in such environments. As caretakers of the forest, these Pokémon carefully grow trees and plants with loving care. The orb-like seeds on a Sceptile's back are filled to the brim with nutrients, which Sceptile use to revitalize the trees in their care. Sceptile regulate their body temperature by basking in sunlight.

Sceptile's bodies are configured for battling prowess and superior mobility in jungle environments, with large, sharp leaves protruding from their arms. Sceptile's huge, razor-sharp, complex tail is not unlike a fern or pine tree.

Despite Sceptile's average weight of around 115 pounds, they are very agile and dexterous in the forest or jungle. They generally travel long distances through the forest or jungle by leaping dexterously amongst the branches of trees. When confronted by an opponent, a Sceptile can use its jumping mobility among the branches to attack its foe from above and behind, slashing with its blade-like leaves.

[edit] In the video games

Sceptile cannot be found in the wild, as with other evolutions of starter Pokémon. They are evolved from Grovyle at level 36, which are evolved from Treecko at level 16.

Statistically, Sceptile is a very strong Grass-type Pokémon, with very high Speed and nearly as high Special Attack, although its Defense and Hit Point statistics are low.

[edit] In the anime

May's Blaziken VS Ash's Sceptile
May's Blaziken VS Ash's Sceptile

Sceptile made its initial Pokémon anime appearance in the Hoenn League in "Shocks and Bonds!", belonging to a trainer named Tyson. It defeats an Aggron in a Double Battle round, defeats a Rhydon in the second round, and battles against Ash Ketchum in the third round.

In the Battle Frontier episode "Odd Pokémon Out", Ash's Grovyle evolves into a Sceptile during a battle with a Tropius. Even after evolution, Sceptile retains its rebellious personality. Ash's Sceptile is initially unable to use any attacks, due to the psychological impact of a Meganium's rejection. However, it regains the ability to use its attacks two episodes later in "Cutting the Ties that Bind". It later learns the Solarbeam attack in the Battle Palace episode "Ka Boom With a View".

[edit] In other properties

[edit] In the card game

Sceptile's appeared in the Pokémon Trading Card Game in the following sets, as Stage 2 Pokémon cards, usually with the Grass type:

  • EX: Ruby and Sapphire (in two versions)
  • EX: Team Aqua vs. Team Magma (as Sceptile ex)
  • EX: Emerald
  • EX: Crystal Guardians (as Sceptile ex δ, a Psychic type)

[edit] In the manga

Sceptile is a Battle Factory rental Pokémon used by Emerald, who steals it after the battle due to its unnatural characteristics.
