SmartLink is a Radio Frequency Identification Chip enabled credit card sized smartcard to be used on the PATH transit system in New Jersey and New York City. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) plans to expand its use to most of public transportation in New York metropolitan area. It is designed to eventually replace the current farecard, QuickCard, and eventually to be adopted by most transit agencies in the tri-state area[1]. The full implementation of PATH SmartLink has been scheduled to be available in late 2007. The PANYNJ has started distributing Senior SmartLink Cards in October 2006. There is an initial fee of $5 maximum for obtaining or replacing a new SmartLink Card.
