Puerto Rico
From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is a territory or a colony of the United States, located east of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Sea. The language is Spanish; the money is the US dollar. Puerto Rico means "rich port" in English, and it was "discovered" by Christopher Columbus in 1492, and claimed by the Spainards. The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico includes the largest so-named island and a number of smaller islands and keys, including Mona, Vieques, and Culebra. Of those three, only Culebra and Vieques are populated year-round. Mona is unpopulated through large parts of the year, except for employees of the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources. People can visit the island for hiking and camping by getting the required permits.
