Tobias Toby Issacs is a fictional high schooler from the TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation; he is portrayed by Jake Goldsbie.

Toby Issacs was introduced to Degrassi as smart seventh grader who was best friends with J.T. Yorke and the annyoing stepbrother of perky but popular Ashley Kerwin. He helped save Emma from the online predator she met roaming on the Internet, this lead to a year long crush on Emma Nelson. His grandparents died in the Holocaust.
[edit] Saving Emma
Toby appears for the first time in the pilot episode as J.T.'s friend from summer camp meeting both Emma Nelson and Manny Santos. Later Manny asks for Toby's help in hacking in Emma's email, because she fears that Emma had gone to meet an online stranger. He hacked into her email to find where Emma was heading. Toby, Manny, and J.T. ran to tell Emma's mom, Spike, and friend Snake where Emma was. They save Emma in time from being raped.

While adjusting to life with his step-sister Ashley, Toby was unhappy, and did not like Ashley. So Toby convinces his friend J.T. to run against Ashley in the school presidential race. J.T. ends up dropping out and Ashley wins.
[edit] An unrequited crush
Toby maintains a crush on Emma for the entire season, often helping her out with various projects. Emma remains unaware of his feelings until she stands up Toby, who angrily confronts her. Manny then tells her about his feelings.
Following her break-up with Sean, Toby comforts her, though nothing more comes of it.

Toby started eight grade with a major crush on someone else this time, Spinner's adopted little sister Kendra Mason this lead to the two becoming an item. During his relationship with Kendra, Toby was feeling the pressure of everyday life such as sex, and began buying condoms, which made both Kendra and her brother furious. Toby also faced a somewhat weight problem, when he began starving himself just so he can be an excellent wrestler for the Degrassi Wrestling Team.

In season 2, Toby's eye is caught by Spinner's younger sister Kendra mainly because of their common interests such as computers and anime. The problem was that Spinner was very protective of his sister and threatened Toby to stay away from her but after he stood up to him causing Spinner eventually allowed Toby to date Kendra. They had some trouble later as Toby was always around Kendra but they worked it out and remained a couple until Toby's sophomore year.

After so long of being teased, Toby wants to be popular like Sean is, so he joins the wrestling team. He ends up trying to make weight by not eating, then taking laxatives and passes out during a match. He eventually develops an eating disorder.

[edit] JT and Toby
As JT started hanging out with Paige since he helped her through her rape, he started getting much more popular than before. Toby became upset with this and feared losing his best friend. After discovering JT has a wet dream over Liberty, Toby threatens to tell if he doesn't eat with him and his cool friends. However Toby becomes upset when JT makes fun of him and ends up telling everyone about the Liberty dream.

Still jealous over JT's popularity, Toby set out to prove he's cool enough and decides to hack into the Degrassi grade system and change Jimmy's grade. However it backfires when Jimmy gets an 8888% and gets caught by Raditch trying to fix his error. He rats Jimmy out and Jimmy tells him "he's 100% fake."

In a Breakfast Club style episode, Toby gets stuck in detention with Hazel, Sean, Ellie and Jimmy, Toby stands out as the geek of the group, but as the kids spend more time in detention and with each other, Jimmy realizes while not necessarily cool, Toby is dependable, espeically when he takes the blame for the group to Radtich. At the beginning when they play truth or dare Hazel is dared to kiss Toby.

[edit] Rick's Only Ally
After being ditched by J.T., Toby becomes friends with the school's outcast, Rick Murray. He is the only one that is a friend to Rick. Even others, like Emma, are only being nice to him because they feel sorry for him. Despite being Rick's friend, during the shooting Toby told Rick to stop, but Rick ignored him.
Following the shooting of [Rick], Toby and JT became friends again when Manny reminded the latter of how Toby had always been there for him.

[edit] A Friend in Need
When Toby learns JT has gotten Liberty pregnant, he does his best to advise and help him out. The two nearly have a falling-out when a money-desperate JT first demands Toby lend him some cash and then insults him, but Toby is there for him after he overdoses and lands in the hospital.
[edit] Between J.T. and Liberty
With Liberty in the middle of her pregnancy and refusing to talk to JT, Toby is stuck between them, working with her on the school council, but remaining friends with him at the same time. He secretly gives JT various details about Liberty's pregnancy progress, but is discovered when Liberty is asked by the principal about stepping down as class president. Liberty's water breaks in Toby's car, but he calls the hospital and paramedics arrive in time. He is with her and JT when she gives birth at the hospital.

[edit] Death of J.T.
The next year, Degrassi begins a feud with Lakehurst High. JT sets up a fight between the two schools. Toby doesn't want to fight, and JT soon tells everybody to leave before the fight begins. However, Toby is then beat up by Lakehurst thugs and has to wear a cast and a neck brace. When he goes to school Emma and Manny help him get around. JT, feeling guilty about Toby's injuries, wants to get revenge. Even though Toby pleads with him to stop, since more violence wasn't needed, JT is still angry at Lakehurst- later, because of this anger, he gets stabbed in the back by a Lakehurst. At the hospital, Toby said he was JT's brother (since no other family was there) and found out that JT had died becasue his aorta was punctured and the doctors couldn't save J.T. Toby was in shock.
[edit] Feelings for Liberty
After J.T.'s death, Toby to help Liberty deal with his death by taking what he called "a mini vacation" with Liberty to help her deal, but he didn't help much when he kissed her. Soon Danny and even Manny had got a sense something was going on between him and Liberty, and Toby confessed to Manny that he liked Liberty. Liberty soon discovered the truth about J.T.'s feelings for her when he confessed the truth about the last thing he said to Mia during the J.T. Yorke Memorial.
