"Umbrella" is a R&B song written by Terius "The Dream" Nash, Rihanna and Sean Carter for Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad. The song features rapper Jay-Z. The collaboration between Rihanna and Jay-Z had been in the works for a very long time. The single started radio play the week of March 28, 2007. [1] The song premiered on New York radio station Hot 97 and on her Def Jam website Thursday, March 29th at 5:00pm EST, subsequentially leaking to the Internet just minutes later. It Premiered For The UK On The BBC's Radio 1 At 4.58pm On The Scott Mills Show. He Made Fun Of The Fact Of Rihanna's Weird Ideas For Songs, Stating "She Started With Pon De Replay, Then SOS, Obviously Needing Someone To Help Her, Then She Told Us How She Was Unfaithful And Then She Was In The Studio And Thought I've Came Up With So Many Good Ideas What Shall I Pick, Then She Turned Round And Saw An Umbrella And Went Thats A Great Idea For A Song." It Premiered On The Piczo Countdown After Been Leaked On The Internet In Britain 1 Day Before.

Rihanna's first single off her upcoming album Good Girl Gone Bad, is a beautiful relationship song. It can be directed towards friends having each other back. Or lovers holding each other down during times of distress. Jay-Z is featured on the very beginning of the song.

Rihanna has been mostly known by her dance-y, popp-y sound, i.e. "SOS" and "Pon De Replay". For this single, Rihanna took more of an R&B sound.
