[edit] History
On 28 July 1883 this station was opened as a station of Nippon Tetsudō (lit. Japan Railway) company, when this company opened the railway from Ueno Station to Kumagaya Station (part of today's Takasaki Line). At that time only 6 stations was opend along the way(Ueno, Ōji, Urawa, Ageo, Kōnosu, and Kumagaya), so Urawa Station is one of the oldest stations of Tōhoku Main Line, and the oldest in current Saitama City as well.
[edit] Station Layout
Now the new elevated railroad tracks and platforms are under construction, and so the structure of the station is quite complicated.

[edit] Railway elevation around Urawa Station
Now Saitama City and JR East cooperate in the elevation of Urawa Station and the railroad tracks around it. The railroad tracks separate the town, and so cars and pedestrians can not easily go across the tracks. What's more, Shonan-Shinjuku Line trains now pass through Urawa Station, because they run on the tracks originally laid only for freight trains and Urawa Station does not have any platform for these tracks. So they have decided to reconstruct the station as the new elevated rail station, construct another platform for Shonan-Shinjuku Line trains, and widen the road which goes under the railload near the station. The construction will last for a couple of years.
