WAOW-TV is an ABC affiliate which serves Wausau, Wisconsin. They also operate a satellite station in Eagle River, Wisconsin, WYOW 34 plus a cable/digital CW station, "WBWA". WAOW's transmitter is located in Wausau. Both WAOW and WYOW are owned by Quincy Newspapers.
[edit] History
WAOW is Wausau's second television station having signed on the air on June 12, 1965 serving as a satellite station of WKOW/Madison, Wisconsin as part of the Wisconsin Television Network, which would later include WXOW/La Crosse and WQOW/Eau Claire. By the 1980s the station would gradually start focusing more on the Wausau/Rhinelander market by adding local programming and content.
On New Year's Day 1997, WAOW opened a satellite of its own called WYOW to expand its coverage area in northeastern Wisconsin and parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Both the WAOW and WYOW DT2 subcarriers have programming from The CW Television Network. Cable viewers also see CW programming on cable 15, where WBWA is located now.
On December 1, 1999 a third station in the DMA, WFXS Fox 55 went on the air; the stations are owned by different companies, but WFXS hired WAOW to provide news and weather resources on the station.
WAOW had also previously aired Fox's NFL package from 1994-1999 after the NFC contract and rights for most Green Bay Packers games moved from CBS (i.e. WSAW (Channel 7) for Wausau), due to the lack of a local Fox affiliate.
