WCFN is the MyNetworkTV affiliate located in Springfield, Illinois. Owned by Nexstar Broadcasting Group Inc., it is the sister station to WCIA (TV), the CBS affiliate for Champaign, Decatur and Springfield. Both stations operate out WCIA's Champaign facility. WCFN specializes in coverage for the Springfield area.
WCFN began broadcasting in the mid-1960s as a low-power translator of WCIA, which for a long time had trouble getting its signal into Springfield. WCFN became a full-power satellite of WCIA in 1982, and became a separate UPN affiliate in 2002.
Until 2007, WCFN aired events that originated from CBS Sports when WCIA carried Fighting Illini (or Big Ten) sports (For example, a college basketball game from CBS Sports at the same time as a Fighting Illini basketball game from ESPN Plus). WCFN also carried sports from ESPN Plus when there was an Illini game the same way on CBS Sports on WCIA; or when there was an NFL game.
In early 2007, WCFN and the IHSA came to an agreement to carry coverage of IHSA tournaments that are televised throughout the state. The Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign-Urbana market had been without an over-the-air flagship station for these kind of events.
