Wikipedia:WikiProject Books
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
First, an important note for everyone to remember:
The members of this WikiProject have come together to make some suggestions about how Wikipedians may contribute to articles about books and literature in general. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the below guidelines may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

[edit] Title
WikiProject Books
[edit] Scope
This WikiProject aims primarily to provide book reviews and publishing history of manuscript and published books (both fiction and nonfiction), significant pamphlets, series of books, serials, graphic novels and compilations of plays, poetry, and short stories that were published as books.
The goals of this project are to identify titles that do not yet have articles in Wikipedia, and to discuss and suggest guidelines for writing articles.
The most complete list of books that have Wikipedia articles is at List of books by title. Please help maintain this list by adding requested articles to the list, writing articles about books that have been requested, filling in and correcting the titles, authors and dates on the list, and correcting links.
If you like the system of Categories (admittedly, some people don't), you can add one of the genres that are subcategories of Category:Books to each article.

[edit] Hierarchy definition
Since there are many types of publications, boundaries must be set so that other WikiProjects can guide articles that this one doesn't. So far, the titles that have been included on the List of books by title are those that if most people saw the item in their hands, they would call it a 'book'.
Included:
- Novels (i.e. Fiction books - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels#Hierarchy Definition for expansion)
- Graphic novels.
- Collections of plays, poetry, short stories and comics that were published as books.
- Nonfiction books on any subject.
- Reference works (including almanacs, atlases dictionaries, encyclopedias, gazetteers, lexicons, telephone directories and thesauri).
- Books in any language, using any method of reproduction.
- Published albums of pictures or photographs.
- Bound manuscripts and other unpublished books.
- Pamphlets.
Not included:
- Computer files, databases and Internet sites that have never been published on paper.
- Magazines, journals, newspapers and other serials that were issued more frequently than once a year should be included in WikiProject Journalism.
- Documents that are likely to be separate sheets of paper, unbound.

[edit] Templates
The general banner for WikiProject Books is {{WPBooks}}. You can add it to any articles in the scope of the WikiProject like so:
{{WPBooks |class = |needs-infobox= }}
- class: Options are FA, A, GA, B, Start, Stub, Dab, Template, Cat. If blank, this will default as Unassessed. Descriptions of the options can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Virginia/Assessment#Quality scale.
- needs-infobox: Answer yes if the article lacks an infobox, otherwise remove this line. Nothing changes to the appearance to the template if yes is used, however it will be added to the category of book articles needing one.

For assessing book articles within the project, see /Assesment. This WikiProject is assessing major literature related articles, see /Worklist. For assessing novels see WikiProject Novels/Assessment.
One of the most common methods used by WikiProjects to monitor and prioritize their work is that of assessing the articles within their scope. The de facto standard for these assessments is the Version 1.0 Editorial Team's assessment scale (shown at right).
This project also makes importance assessments.
