Wikipedia:WikiProject Calvinism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Welcome to the Calvinism WikiProject, a collaboration area and group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Calvinism.
(For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject and the Guide to WikiProjects).
- Goals
- This project plans to improve the volume and accuracy of the articles about Calvinism on Wikipedia
Contents |
[edit] Scope
The general scope is the same as that of the Calvinism template displayed in the sidebar, but also covers the myriad associated topics which don't fit in the space there
- As a particular case, articles in projects that are essentially a subset of this one will mostly not be included. For example, the Anglicanism article should belong, but most of the other articles associated with Wikipedia:WikiProject Anglicanism should be left to that project, unless they're of particular interest for non-Anglican Calvinists; for example, John Calvin himself would be of general interest, even if a future Wikipedia:WikiProject Swiss Calvinism were to also take interest in him.
- Calvinists should only be included if:
- They're theologians, philosophers, or some other important Christian worker (eg. Bible translator, evangelist, whatever)
- They're politicians (kings, lords, whatever) that had an influence on the ability of Calvinism to spread
- Possibly someday we'll start including Calvinist ministers (and feel free to include some if you're sure that you are going to work on them), but we started doing that, and it was too huge for us
[edit] Open tasks
[edit] Tasks for anyone
[edit] Tasks for any member of WikiProject Calvinism
- Vote in favour of our Calvinism stubs category: Calvinism stub
- Portal:Calvinism:
- The first Showcase articles will appear in April
- Further tips can be found at Wikipedia:Portal/Instructions (mostly things to do when the portal is complete)
- If anyone has some quotes or a little-known fact (for "Did you know" section), they can be filled in too.
- Offer your opinion on the recently-created templates (see "Guidelines" section, below)
[edit] Assessment
Help assess articles. The Basic process is:
- Find an article to assess (if all else fails, try Category:Unassessed-Class_Calvinism_articles)
- Assess it according to the assessment criteria
- Enter your findings in the template on the talk page (see Article Scope Template on WikiProject Calvinism)
[edit] Participants
To join the project:
- Add your name to the participants list below
- Look at the Userboxes below (under templates), and add any you desire to your user page
- Arrange some way of keeping up with the news from WikiProject Calvinism. Suggested methods are:
- Include the news page on your user page. To do this, Edit your userpage, and write {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Calvinism/News}} on it somewhere
- Add the News page to your watchlist, so that when you look at it, you will see the appropriate changes
- Participate however you wish; if you need some ideas, there's a todo list above; if you have a particular interest, feel free to pursue that instead
Please feel free to add yourself here, and to indicate any areas of particular interest. If possible, please list general background (eg. Scots/Presbyterian, Dutch/Reformed, Anglican, Reformed Baptist, whatever), as the intent is, once the project gathers sufficient momentum, to form task forces based around some of these.

[edit] Stages
This project will hopefully move through a number of stages:
- Administrivia
- Basic setup - mostly done
- Interconnection: this is the tagging stage; we may also want to issue some specific invitations (on hold for now).
- Assessment: Assess all the articles according to class and importance
- Role filling: hopefully we can fill a few of the roles we need (see roles below)
- Ongoing improvement: The following will run side-by-side
- Continual interaction and improvement (this is just the normal Wikipedia stuff)
- Collaboration: See collaboration below
- Maintenance: This is the stage when all our articles have Featured Article status
[edit] Guidelines
If you intend to write content (and not just edit/help/whatever), read the brief paragraph at Talk:History_of_Protestantism#Incomprehensible jargon first; it may no longer be true of the pages mentioned, but it should be kept in mind that the article should be readable to the layperson.
[edit] Biography (People) articles
If you're writing about a person, you'll be very interested in Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography, as they include templates and information that will help you quickly achieve a reasonable article. We're in the process of developing some infoboxen and templates (see above); feel free to use these. On the Biography page, you'll find particularly useful their "11 steps to an at-least B-Class article".
Our templates are:
- {{Infobox Philosopher}} provided by WikiProject Philosophy
- {{Infobox Calvinist Theologian}}
Someday we may also create:
- {{Infobox Calvinist Minister}}
- {{Infobox Calvinist Politician}} (for kings, etc)
These last can wait for now. Consider collaborating with Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography on these, and especially {{Infobox Biography}}).
[edit] Denomination articles
[edit] 10 step guide to creating at least a B-Class denomination article
- Create the page
- Create an outline for the denomination article you started:
- Write {{subst:Calvinist Denomination|denomination=name|location=location}} as the content of the page, and save it. The "denomination" tag shouldn't have any Wiki markup in it, but the "location" tag can (ie. "North America and Japan)
- If the article already exists (presumably as a Stub or Start class article), put the tag specified above at the head of the article to give you your outline
- Type in some content for your article. It's generally better to edit one section at a time, as this reduces the chance of edit conflicts (ie. two people making different changes at the same time)
- Populate your article with images such as obtained from Wikimedia Commons, image list, or by posting a request for an image from other Wikipedians, or by getting your own from public domain or, if necessary, fair use sources
- Add the appropriate categories
- Since categories at the bottom of the other Wikipedia articles linked in your article may be appropriate to place in your article, go through each link in your article and review the categories at the bottom of the linked article for inclusion in your article
- Confirm that the internal links, footnotes, and external (non-wiki) links in your article go where you want them to go.
- Post an article request at Wikipedia:Requested articles or Wikipedia:WikiProject Calvinism/to do for each broken (red) link in your article OR remove the double brackets around the broken link (these are your only choices)
- Publicize your article by ...
- adding your article to the List of Reformed churches and by
- submitting your article for Main Page Did You Know consideration at Template talk:Did you know and at the Portal:Calvinism/Did you know page.
- Nominate your article to be featured; see "Collaborations" section below for details, but ONLY after you believe that you completed all the above steps.
- Relax! and take a break if you reached this point. But not too much. We are Calvinists, you know :)
[edit] Denomination templates
If you're writing about a denomination, feel free to use our Template:Infobox Calvinist Denomination and Template:Calvinist Denomination templates, which are still in development.
[edit] Other articles
- If you're writing about theology of philosophy, we'd appreciate ideas for templates and infoboxes
[edit] Collaborations
The intent of collaborations is that we try to advance our articles higher up the assessment scale, and get them featured on various portals, and hopefully even on the front page. The process should work something like the following:
[edit] Nominations
- Everyone nominates their favourite article on either the Calvinism Showcase Article Suggestions or the Calvinism Showcase Biography Suggestions pages. These must already be Top-class on the importance scale (High-class is also acceptable for Biography nominations), and at least B-Class on the assessment scale (see assessment)
- One article is selected every month (hopefully by consensus) to be the Calvinism Portal's showcase article. The first article/bio will be selected 25 (or so) April 2007, to appear in May 2007.
[edit] Push towards Good Article
- Work should continue on the article to improve it. Hopefully at the end of the month, we will be able to put the article forward as a Good article candidate, and get it accepted. If it doesn't get accepted, put it back on the nominations page for a future month.
- Once we have a good article, we should try to get it featured as the showcase article on Portal:Christianity, using their Christianity Showcase Article Suggestions or the Christianity Showcase Biography Suggestions. We should be able to achieve one article per year and 2-4 biographies per year on this page; they rotate these monthly. There's a particular need to put forward a biography at this point, because Pelayo of Asturias has been the featured bio for the last 3 months
- As time goes on, we'll need to develop our own Peer Review process for use at this point (based on Wikipedia:Peer Review and Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Peer review)
[edit] Push for the A-class
- If our article is accepted at Portal:Christianity, we should continue to work on it, moving it towards an A-Class article
- If our article isn't accepted, go back to the Nominations stage
- If WikiProject Christianity ever gets a Peer Review process, we could use that; in the meantime, we might need to use the general Wikipedia:Peer Review process
[edit] Push for Featured Article
- Once we feel it has reached A-class, we should nominate it as a Wikipedia:Featured article candidate. Hopefully we should be able to achieve one of these every year. If we get knocked back, keep trying.
[edit] Push for the main page
- When we get a page to FA-class, we need to submit it on Wikipedia:Today's_featured_article/requests to try to get it on the front page. We should be able to get one of these every few years or so.
[edit] The Future
- When we have enough FA-class articles, we can even try to get a Wikipedia:Featured_topic status on a topic, although we may have to pick a smaller topic than "Calvinism" when we do this
As we progress through this, we can start using the userboxes at User:UBX/Userboxes/Wikipedia#Other that are relevant to this sort of thing
[edit] Roles
If anyone is interested in volunteering for the following roles, please sign yourself up below:
[edit] Calvinism showcase editors
Role; assess the nominated articles every month, and promote the most voted for article to be the Showcase article/bio for that month. We need one editor for each of:
[edit] Article facilitator
There can be lots of these, one for each article.
Role: Someone who agrees to try and facilitate a particular article through the Collaboration process specified above. Tasks:
- Nominate article for various statuses (ie. to be featured article at various points in the collaboration process)
- Use the article talk page to try to keep people focussed on achieving the next stage
- Archive the talk page if it gets to long
- You're not promising to actually edit the article, or hassle people, just to help it along (although you can edit of you want)
- Remember, if you get knocked back, don't take it personally, except as a learning experience; learn that the article needs alteration to fit the criteria
[edit] Facilitators
Article facilitators sign your name here, with the article:

The new project WikiProject Calvinism has started.
[edit] Most important tasks
- Please vote on our stub category
- Help is still needed with the basic setting up phase. Tagging as a drive is indefinately on hold (see discussion at Talk page claims); feel free to work on assessment
[edit] Current discussions
Any important discussions -- any discussion inactive for a week should be removed
- We need more input on what should be in the Template for Calvinism. Please share your thoughts in the sections of the talk page starting with Template_talk:Calvinism#Barth_and_Reformed_Baptists (TimNelson 07:13, 27 March 2007 (UTC))
- In particular, please vote on whether or not to include Reformed Baptists in the template at Template_talk:Calvinism#Reformed_Baptists_straw_poll. --Flex (talk|contribs) 16:04, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- The assessment stage and future direction of the project are under discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Calvinism#Stage change: Tagging to Assessment
