Wikipedia:WikiProject Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), an attempt to better organise and unify articles relating to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). If you would like to participate, you can edit the article attached to this page, or visit the project page, where you can join the project and/or contribute to the discussion

This WikiProject seeks to do the following:

  1. Help create and maintain a comprehensive resource on all aspects of Quakers and Quakerism that are suitable for Wikipedia, including Quaker history, practices, theology, beliefs, biographies, writings, meetings, and organizations.
  2. Help maintain quality articles on issues that Friends have traditionally been concerned with, like peace/pacifism, gambling, Native American issues, and so on.
  3. Ensure that Friends are accurately represented in other Wikipedia articles, such as articles about religion or Christianity. E.g. Christian views of women

This project scopes all things relating to The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)

Contents

[edit] Current Collaboration

Create or complete articles for topics featured in the Quaker Tapestry. There is a list of the panels in the tapestry's article already, we should break out a list of what's needed and post that here.

You can find an archive of past collaborations here.

[edit] Categories

We keep an eye on the categories related to our work:

There are also the following two minor categories for the article tracking (see below):

[edit] Templates

These templates will prove useful for labeling pages, use them well.

[edit] List of Articles

We need to keep the list of articles below in sync with the articles in the categories we watch (please note not all articles below should be in the Quakerism category).

[edit] List of Quakers

Items on the List of Quakers and in the Category:Quakers need to be cross-checked to include all relevant people in both places. Any articles on the list page that are not in the category need to have [[Category:Quakers]] added to the end. We also need to cross check those pages with the list of people in the article section below.

[edit] Friends Schools

Similar to List of Quakers, and List of Friends Schools page and Category:Quaker schools need to be cross checked, and the list of articles below updated.

[edit] Non-article tasks

[edit] Templates

  • putting our stub tag, {{quaker-stub}}, on pages that need it.
  • a YM template
  • a Quaker bio template

[edit] Illustrations

  • Quaker star on Wikicommons. At this time the license tag {{PD}} (public domain) is obsolete and need a new definition. Proposal: {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}}. What do you think? (MHM-en).

[edit] Cross-wiki collaboration?

It would be great to have the classic Quaker texts on Wikisource, and even greater to have more than just the classics. Also, the familiar quotes could be put on Wikiquote.

Articles for this project are broken into several groups. Articles on those pages are currently organized with the schema found here. The bot-generated list of articles and their rates can be found here, statistics on articles being tracked by the bot can be found in the table to the right.

In addition to the groups listed here there are also lists of Quaker related pages at: List of Quakers, List of Friends Schools and List of Quaker businesses.

[edit] Procedures

This WikiProject should follow existing Quaker practices when possible. In particular, rather than voting on proposed actions that require a group decision, participants should comment as they are led, this is fortunately very compatable with Wikipedia's desision making process.

Currently there are no proposed group actions and no clerk but the need has not yet arisen.

[edit] Vocabulary

"Several of the articles I have worked on (Religious Society of Friends included), have had problems finding agreed upon vocabulary. I'd like to suggest that we include in this project a set of agreed upon vocabulary for use in the articles. Hopefully this will promote constancy and clarity across the articles. To that end, I propose the first term to be listed be the name of the group, and my idea of a suggested format for listing. I don't mean to suggest this as the final answer, just a starting place." --Ahc

[edit] "Religious Society of Friends" versus "Society of Friends" versus "Friends" verus "Quakers"

  • Within articles about Friends we use the full traditional name Religious Society of Friends, or simply Friends for short.
  • Use of Society of Friends be restricted to use to discussions of groups that are not comfortable with the Religious titling.
  • The term Quaker should be reserved for use in other articles as links to RSoF and when the history of the term is being explained.

[edit] non-credal, non-creedal?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, either form is used. Two es if you think it comes from "creed", one if you think it comes from the latin credo. The more "current" form is with one e (the most recent use of "creedal" the OED lists is from the 1870s, while the other form is how the Economist spelt it in 1957).

We'll use the spelling "credal" and "non-credal" ("noncredal" looks funny) when it comes up.

Please add yourself, and if you like indicate your connection with Friends or particular areas of interest.

Name Talk page Joined Project Special interests/Background
Zach Zach talk 00:22, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC) Became a member of New England YM half a year ago; interested in the early Quakers and connections to radical Christianity.
Logophile Logophile talk 13:59, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC) I am a descendant of early New England Friends and am very sympathetic toward Quaker testimonies. I am not an official member of the Society, but I consider the Evangelical Friends Richard Foster and Dallas Willard two of my spiritual mentors through their books.
Ahc Ahc talk 04:55, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC) I am a member of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. My father's family has been Quaker for nearly as long as it has been an option. I have participated in events hosted by several other yearly meetings and participated YouthQuake which have given me extensive exposure to Friends in North America. I am most interested in what divides and unites the Religious Society of Friends today.
Doovinator Doovinator My family belonged to large mainstream Protestant churches when I was young, but when I was about fourteen became enamored of the small local Society of Friends meeting (they didn't use "religious" in their title, maintaining Quaker thought was personal belief, not religion). We attended meeting for the next five years or so, then moved out of town. I was rather shocked a few years later when I walked into a Quaker church; it was like a different planet. I haven't been to meeting in many years (there's not one remotely similar anywhere near where I now live) but have held my personal belief for nearly forty years.
Eric Forste Eric Forste I attend Strawberry Creek Monthly Meeting of Pacific YM. I like to think I started the articles on Margaret Fell (although that got merged, later on) and Elias Hicks.
Sdedeo Sdedeo 06:48, 9 August 2005 (UTC) I've attended Princeton's Monthly Meeting (part of FGC.) I've written big chunks of Quaker views of homosexuality -- I didn't start the page, but it was full of misinformation, so I waded in. It could well be merged into a different article.
Evan G Evan G 12:46, 9 August 2005 (UTC) I am a member of Canberra Regional Meeting. I have attended Friends' meetings since early 2001, in Canberra and before that in Brisbane. My interest in Quakerism is broad, including Quaker views of homosexuality. I am keen to see articles on Quakers reflect an international understanding of the Religious Society of Friends, but of course I am best placed to write on things relating to Australian Quakers.
AJR AJR I am a British Quaker (and towards the liberal hippy Friends end of Britain YM.) My parents are both members of BYM, and I have attended meeting since I was very young. I don't know much about Friends outside of BYM though.
Paul Carpenter Paul Carpenter I am a British Quaker, although not officially a member of BYM (I'm down as an "attender"); both my parents and significant part of my family are Quakers. I personally have attended a couple of BYMs, I am also quite involved with the Quaker Youth Theatre
Matt Baker Matt Baker I'm a British Quaker, and am involved with Quaker Youth Theatre, Junior Young Friends, and Junior Yearly Meeting as a participant/volunteer only. I am told my Quaker heritage dates back to 1652, and I'm going to apply for membership soon (I'm an attender, currently).
Artsygeek Artsygeek I'm a Friend in Baltimore Yearly Meeting. I'm Co-Clerk of BYM's Religious Ed Committee and member of its Ad Hoc Committee for Gender and Sexual Diversity Concerns.
JFT JFT I'm a British Quaker, down as an "attender". I currently go to Warwickshire Junior Young Friends and have started an article on it (though under an older and now redundant user name). I went to BYM at York in 2005, plan to go to BYM in May 2006, and will be at JYM this year too
Rich Accetta-Evans Rich Accetta-Evans I am a Friend in 15th Street Meeting of New York Yearly Meeting. I joined Friends in Albany, New York in 1968 and transferred to 15th Street in the early 1970's. My understanding of Quakerism is possibly more in line with that of so-called "conservative" unprogrammed meetings such as Ohio Yearly Meeting than it is with the generally liberal meeting to which I actually belong. Still I am pretty comfortable (most of the time) at 15th Street. I have served in various capacities over the years: ranging from greeter at the door to clerk of the meeting. Currently I am a member of the Ministry and Worship Committee. I also maintain a blog called Brooklyn Quaker
DAllen DAllen 18:01, 31 January 2006 (UTC) Member of Ithaca Monthly Meeting / NYYM, Attending meeting in Ontario. Working on the main article, plus Quaker views of homosexuality and Friends for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Concerns, likely others to come.
Neil Fullagar Neil Fullagar A member of the Society of Friends for 26 years, I started the FLGBTQC page and edited various others. I am a member and former clerk of San Francisco Meeting, Pacific Yearly Meeting ("the other PYM"), former Ministry & Counsel Committee member of (then) FLGC, former FGC Central Committee and Long Range Conference Planning Committee member, and member of the 2006 FGC Gatherig Planning Committee (and Junior Gathering Co-Clerk.)
Tom Tom 21:01, 7 April 2006 (UTC) Married in the Meeting House on the campus of the Moses Brown School, Providence, RI
Ted Ted 20:29, 22 April 2006 (UTC) A "conscientious nonmember" of a small yearly meeting in the US. I've served as clerk of what passes for a yearly meeting here and have served on FGC Central Committee and others. I normally edit topics in my vocation (genetics).
nirvana2013 nirvana2013 09:41, 24 April 2006 (UTC) An attendee at several Meetings, regard myself as a nonviolent Christian anarchist.
Vernon White Vernon White British Q, now living in Cornwall and exploring the Q heritage in these parts, especially the Fox family of Falmouth (two of them produced fascinating Journals, published in the C20th). I am also interested in defining the Q faith as non-credal to the extentof rejecting the term "Quakerism".
BCorr BCorr 11:49, 8 August 2006 (UTC) In the process of joining Friends Meeting at Cambridge (in Massachusetts). Generally interested in the history of Friends and the various splits and differences among the branches of the Society.
Roy Roy talk 07:01, 10 August 2006 (UTC) I'm not sure I'm doing any of this correctly, but please know that I do not intend to offend. I am a member of Northwest Yearly Meeting, living in Newberg, Oregon. I have been involved deeply with Friends for the last thirty years or so. My wife (Kathleen) and I have both served on exec committee for Friends Association for Higher Education (FAHE) so have developed several good friendships with Quakers from all over the place, including, in no particular order Baltimore, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Kansas, Ohio, Guildford, California (especially Whittier), Bolivia, Peru, Kenya, Rwanda, England, Iowa, and of course, Oregon/Washington/Idaho (both NWYM and PYM). Encountered Friends when I attended George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon and began a process of becoming convinced. I am not a joiner by nature, but the fit was so exact I finally could not resist. Earned PhD in Org Com, with foci in Semiotics/Anth linguistics/Philosophy and Communication (so I tend to focus on organizations, structures and the "why" things are like they are). I am an evangelical, but am wondering if the term is particularly useful any more, given how it has been drug around by the political right. I am frequently amazed at how misunderstood various groups of Quakers seem to be, especially by one another. Supporter of FCNL, AFSC, RSWR, etc.
Dan Treadway Dan Treadway 12:01, 23 August 2006 (UTC) I'm a lifelong Frined from Iowa YM (C).
Badbilltucker Badbilltucker 17:22, 19 December 2006 (UTC} Probably primarily in assessments and other directly project-related activites.

MHM 26 January 2007 Member of Geneva Monthly Meeting, Switzerland.
Interested in improving articles on Friends in the French Wikipedia. This WikiProject is a great help!
John Harvey John Harvey 31 January 2007 Birthright Quaker and retired computer geek becoming an amateur educationist interested in how to teach children to learn high order thinking skills based on Peirce's pragmaticism
Drum guy Drum guy 17 February 2007 Attender of Britain YM, interested in general work and topics to do with Quaker practices/events/meetings I'm familiar with.
Thexalon Thexalon 10 March 2007 Raised in New England Yearly Meeting (Concord Friends Meeting), have worked at a couple of Quaker camps, as well as had some involvement in AFSC. My mother is also an extremely involved Friend, having served in the past as presiding clerk of New England YM, and is currently doing research on Friends involvement with slavery and abolition.
