Ethan Rom is a recurring fictional character on the ABC television series Lost played by William Mapother. The surgeon for the antagonistic and mysterious group known as "The Others," Ethan was the first on-island character to be introduced who was not on Oceanic Flight 815. He infiltrated the fuselage survivors, posing as one of them, until they discovered his true identity at which point he kidnapped Charlie Pace and the pregnant Claire Littleton, disposing of the former soon after.
[edit] Fictional character history
Originally from Ontario, Canada, Ethan worked for Mittelos Bioscience. In "Not in Portland," over three years prior to the crash of Oceanic Flight 815, he helped recruit Juliet Burke from Miami, Florida.
In "A Tale of Two Cities," over three years later, Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on the island where Ethan was living and he was sent by Ben Linus to pose as a fuselage survivor and make some kind of a list of the survivors. During the timeline of "White Rabbit", Ethan is seen (from a flashback in "Exposé") speaking to Nikki and Paulo, telling them to look in the jungle for their lost possessions.
Ethan is first seen in "Solitary" hunting with John Locke. In "Raised by Another," Hurley Reyes asks Ethan his information for a census. Ethan knew that he was about to be exposed, and although he was yet to make a list, he kidnapped Claire and Charlie with help from more Others and fled. They hung Charlie from a tree, trying to kill him. In "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues" Ethan intercepts Jack and badly beats him, warning him to stop following him.
In "Maternity Leave," Ethan examines the pregnant Claire, asking her questions about her unborn child in the DHARMA Initiative medical station. He drugs her and convinces her to give up her child to him and the Others, stating that they are good people. Before she is able to give him her child, Alex frees her, and even though he leads a search party, he is unable to find her.
Having lost Claire, Ethan attempts to bring her back in "Homecoming," stating that he will kill someone new each night Claire is not returned. He does so on the first night, killing either Steve Jenkins or Scott Jackson on the beach. The next day, Claire offers to use herself as bait, luring Ethan out of the jungle. Locke, Jack, Kate, Sayid Jarrah and James "Sawyer" Ford proceed to run in and tackle him down. Before they are able to extract any answers from him, however, Charlie shoots him six times using a gun that Jack had dropped, killing him instantly.
Charlie and Hurley later bury Ethan in "Outlaws".
[edit] Trivia
- Ethan Rom is an anagram of "Other Man."
- Despite being killed in the first season, he has appeared in all three, including the second season episode "Maternity Leave", and the third season episodes: "A Tale Of Two Cities", "Not in Portland" and "Exposé". He is slated to return in the upcoming episode, "One of Us."
