[edit] Plot summary
The episode begins with a flashback featuring Juliet in Miami, caring for her pregnant sister. Returning to the present, Jack holds Ben hostage in the operating room as Kate and Sawyer escape. Jack learns that the three have been on a second island; meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer flee into the jungle.
In a second flashback, Juliet's employer, her ex-husband, Edmund Burke, confronts her regarding research she has been conducting on her sister, asking to be involved in the project. In the present, Alex reveals to Kate and Sawyer that she has a boat they may use to escape to the main island, but demands that they help her rescue her boyfriend, Karl.
In the past, Juliet is interviewed by a Mr. Alpert from a genetics company called Mittelos Bioscience, asking her to join a firm in Portland, Oregon. On the island, Alex, Kate, and Sawyer free Karl from a room where he appears to be undergoing brainwashing.
In Miami, Juliet’s sister asks about the interview, and Juliet informs her that she turned the position down. Rachel tells her that her research was a success, and that Rachel is now pregnant. Juliet informs Edmund of the success, but he is soon killed by a bus.
On the island, Jack works to save Ben, but Ben awakes during the surgery and demands to speak to Juliet. Juliet assists Karl, Kate and Sawyer in leaving the island, but in the process kills Danny Pickett and makes sure that Alex is to remain with the others.
In a final flashback, Juliet agrees to join Mittelos' team in Portland, but is informed that their research site is in another, more remote location. In the present, she informs Jack that Ben told her that she would be allowed to leave the island if she ensured that Alex remained.
[edit] Trivia
- J.J. Abrams was to direct this episode, but had to drop out due to other commitments.[1]
- "Not In Portland", is the first Episode to feature Flashbacks of one of "The Others".
- With reference to the company that offers Juliet a job "Mittelos Bioscience" the word Mittelos can be re-arranged to create the phrase "Time Lost" or "Lost Time". Also the Stephen Hawking book "A brief history of time" is seen being read in the episode.
- When the audio of the video in Room 23 is reversed, the message "Only fools are enslaved by time and space" is present. [2]
- Edmund Burke is actually the name of a philosopher, thus going on with the vein of having Lost characters named after famous philosophers (as with Locke, Hume, Rousseau and Bakunin).
- When Kate and Sawyer find Karl, he is held in room 23, one of the numbers.
