In the science fiction series Stargate Atlantis, the Genii are an advanced, militaristic culture with a technology level similar to mid-20th century Earth, who hide under the mask of simple, Amish-like farmers.

Cowen was the previous leader of the Genii people and old acquaintance of Teyla Emmagan.
When the food supply of the Tau'ri expedition occupying Atlantis began to run out, they were forced to seek trading partners. Relying on their Athosian allies, a team led by John Sheppard travelled to the Genii homeworld to initiate negotiations. The team was introduced to Cowen, who clearly indicated an interest in acquiring the C-4 the team possessed, claiming to use it to clear land for farming. However, when Rodney McKay discovered an entrance to the Genii underground bunker complex and realized the truth about the Genii's two-faced identity, Cowen imprisoned the team and threatened to dispose of them, although Sheppard pressed that both societies' ultimate enemy was the Wraith, and that attacking each other would only benefit their mutual enemy.
A joint strike force was devised to steal valuable intelligence from a Wraith Hive-Ship, but when one of their soldiers was abandoned on the Hive-Ship, which Cowen believed to be because of Teyla Emmagan, the last seeds of mistrust were sewn. Cowen betrayed the team and tried to steal their C-4 explosives, which he believed could help his people perfect their atomic weapons, as well as a Puddle Jumper. However, the Atlantis team had expected the change of heart and brought secret backup. Sheppard and his team were eventually able to escape back to Atlantis, with the stolen Wraith data. [1]
Several weeks later, he sent Acastus Kolya along with a strike team to retrieve the Wraith data device taken by Sheppard and his team. However, when Kolya realized the desolate state of the city when he arrived, Kolya decided to seize it instead. [2] This invasion ultimately proved fruitless, and Cowen lost more than 60 Genii soldiers in the attempt. [3]
When Ladon Radim eventually became convinced that Cowen was no longer worthy to lead the Genii, he devised a plan to topple Cowen's government. Knowing he would not be able to resist the prospect of acquiring several of Atlantis' Puddle Jumpers, he was able to lure Cowen and his personal guard to a desolate planet, where he eventually detonated a nuclear weapon, killing Cowen and his battalion. Radim eventually took Cowen's place as leader of the Genii, in what became known as the Bloodless Coup to his people. [4]
- In "The Storm", "The Eye", and "The Brotherhood", Cowen is referred to as Chief Cowen, however, in "Coup D'etat", he identifies himself as Commander Cowen to Dr. Weir.

Heamon was a Genii soldier and member of Chief Cowen's personal guard. After Ladon Radim's coup, Haemon was forced to become a mercenary. He eventually fell into the service of Acastus Kolya, who was as opposed to the new Genii leadership as Haemon was, albeit for different reasons.
One of the people who eventually relied on the services of Haemon and his men was Lucius Lavin. Lavin, who had recently acquired an Ancient personal shield, sought the admiration of the inhabitants of the village he had recently moved to, and contacted Haemon and his men to intimidate the villagers. It was Lavin's intention to have the mercenaries menace the village, after which Lavin would show op and scare away the alleged attackers, protected by his personal shield.
However, Lavin later refused to to pay the mercenaries what they agreed to. Furious, Haemon contacted Acastus Kolya, who visited the village in search of John Sheppard and his team, also present at the time.
As Sheppard continued to elude the soldiers sent after him, Heamon was almost killed by Kolya. Only because Kolya's pistol was inoperable at the time, Haemon managed to survive. After Sheppard and Lucius Lavin were able to turn the tables on the Genii soldiers, Haemon was forced to retreat from the village, along with his fellow mercenaries. [5]
[edit] Acastus Kolya
A Genii military commander, who originally led a Genii strike force through the Stargate to seize the city of Atlantis and steal supplies from Earth's expedition team. However, the raid was eventually foiled largely due to the efforts of John Sheppard, who escaped initial capture and launched a one-man war on the Genii soldiers. As one of the Genii soldiers killed was Idos, son of Athos, who was a close friend of Kolya's. The two have been enemies ever since.
Kolya was eventually killed by John Sheppard, during his siege of a small village alongside a band of mercenaries, looking to use the Atlantis team as hostages to trade for weapons from Atlantis and to take revenge on Sheppard.

Prenum was an officer in the Genii military, and was stationed on the Genii homeworld.
When the Wraith attacked Atlantis, the Atlantis Expedition had no weapons to use against the approaching Hive-Ships. Knowing the Genii had perfected their atomic weapons and were anxious to test them against the Wraith, Elizabeth Weir contacted the Genii in order to acquire one of their bombs.
Claiming to welcome a dialogue between his people and Atlantis, Prenum invited Weir to his homeworld. However, when she arrived, she was bound, blindfolded, and taken to a secluded compound where Prenum interrogated her, hoping to use her as a bargaining chip for more of Earth's C4 explosives.
Despite captivity, Weir plead her case, asking for two Genii nuclear devices to defend Atlantis from the Wraith. This way, the Genii could see if their weapons worked, at no risk to themselves. Though Prenum argued that the threat of the Wraith had recently come and gone for the Genii, he could not deny that the operation of the technology would probably become important again in the future.
Prenum eventually agreed with Weir, and returned her to Atlantis, along with two officers to deliver twin nuclear devices. Although the devices were not complete, one of them was later successfully deployed against a Hive-Ship, completely destroying it. [6]

Dahlia Radim was a Genii citizen, and sister of Ladon Radim. She apparently worked in close-enough proximity to Genii nuclear devices to be one of a very small group of people to become terminally ill with radiation exposure.
Knowing she would soon die, Dahlia offered her life to the Genii cause and traveled with a number of other terminally ill Genii to Atlantis, as part of an elaborate plan devised by her brother to become the next leader of the Genii. She knew Dr. Elizabeth Weir would hold them hostage when Ladon Radim did not deliver a Zero Point Module, as they had agreed.
However, as Tau'ri medicine was far superior to that of the Genii, Dahlia's life could be saved by Dr. Carson Beckett. Not only Dahlia's life could be saved, but most of her people's radiation sickness could be cured. Still, Chief Cowen was not interested in having his people returned, as every Genii who had traveled to Atlantis did not expect to return, much less live longer.
When Ladon learned of this, he informed some of his captured Atlanteans about his plans to take over the Genii government. After his coup was successful, he agreed to have his sister cured, along with all other Genii citizens who were dying of similar illnesses in exchange for his hostages' lives. [4]

Ladon Radim was an influential Genii and occasional ally of the Atlantis Expedition.
He was a member of Commander Acastus Kolya's initial strike force to seize the city of Atlantis for his people and the Genii's chief scientist. [2] During his people's invasion of the city, he stayed in the control room and figured out how to use the life-signs detector to locate Major Sheppard, who remained loose in the city, attempting to drive the Genii from Atlantis. When the Stargate was dialed to the Genii homeworld so that they could flee the city, he escaped before Sheppard could stop him. [3]
Several months later, he contacted Atlantis, claiming that he had defected from the Genii, and offered to trade a ZPM in exchange for weapons to stage a coup against Cowen. However, when Elizabeth Weir sent a team to obtain the ZPM, Radim captured the invadors, revealing that he had been working with Cowen all along in an elaborate attempt to capture several Puddle Jumpers.
However, when Radim learned that the Atlantis Expedition had the means of rescuing his sister's life, who was dying from the effects of radiation poisoning, he admitted to his hostages that he really was staging a coup. Originally, he would have left the Atlantis team die alongside Cowen and his men, but agreed to send them back in exchange for his sister's life. After Radim and the Atlantis team had escaped through the Stargate, he detonated a nuclear device, wiping out Cowen and his elite guard. When he returned to his homeworld, he became the new leader of the Genii in what eventually became known as the Bloodless Coup. [4]
He was later contacted by the Atlantis Expedition, after Col. Sheppard was captured by Commander Kolya. According to Radim, Kolya had been plotting a coup against Cowen, and had taken Ladon into his confidence. However, but Ladon later betrayed Kolya and staged a coup of his own. Radim eventually helped the Atlantis Expedition to locate Kolya and retrieve Sheppard, and proved to be a trustworthy ally. However, as Kolya considered himself the only rightful leader of the Genii and was bent on eventually staging another coup, Radim's help was not only motivated by altruism. [7]
After the Atlantis Expedition was forced to evacuate Atlantis when a group of Ancients were discovered alive, Ladon approached Ronon Dex and Teyla Emmagan, who had retuned to farming and hunting. Radim invited them to join the Genii in his people's fight against the Wraith. Although Teyla and Ronon both refused, he asked them to think about it. Radim has not been seen since. [8]

Sora was a Genii citizen and daughter of Tyrus. In the past, she had dealt with Teyla Emmagan on several occasions, and although she had always hidden her people's true nature from Teyla, Sora considered her a friend.
When a team from Atlantis visited the Genii homeworld in search for food, Teyla introduced them to Sora. When John Sheppard and Rodney McKay eventually discovered the truth about the Genii's two-faced identity, it was decided that the two peoples would conduct a daring raid against a Wraith Hive-Ship. As a skilled fighter, Sora was not happy to be left behind when her father and Cowen left for the hive-ship alongside the Atlantis team.
When Tyrus, Sora's father, was abandoned on the Hive-Ship, which the Genii believed to be because of Teyla Emmagan, the last seeds of mistrust were sewn. Sora, along with her fellow Genii soldiers, subsequently turned against the team and tried to steal their C-4 explosives as well as a Puddle Jumper. However, the Atlantis team had expected the change of heart and brought secret backup. Sheppard and his team were eventually able to escape back to Atlantis, with the stolen Wraith data. [1]
Several weeks later, Sora was part of Acastus Kolya's strike team sent to infiltrate the city of Atlantis. Although she did not completely agree with Kolya's methods, she did obey him. [2] In the end, though, she disobeyed his orders in order to fight Teyla one on one to revenge her father's death. However, Teyla refused to kill her, and Sora helped Teyla bring the unconscious Carson Beckett to the safety of the control room during the extremely dangerous hurricane that was threatening the city at the time.
After the Genii strike force had been forced to retreat back to their homeworld, Sora was kept prisoner in Atlantis. [3] In the original concept of "The Siege", she was returned to her people as part of the deal for Genii-made fission bombs for the defense of Atlantis. However, since the scene was cut due to time constraints, it is unknown if she was eventually returned.

Tyrus was a Genii soldier and ambassador for his people in trade negotiations with the Athosians.
Tyrus had known Teyla Emmagan for some years, and considered her a friend. When the Atlantis Expedition's supplies began running low, Teyla introduced a team led by Col. Sheppard to her former trading parters on the Genii homeworld to open bartering negotiations for a supply of Genii crops, hoping to augment the growing crops on Lantea's Athosian mainland.
When Sheppard and Rodney McKay discovered the truth of the Genii, that they were a growing military force, Tyrus and Chief Cowen accompanied Major John Sheppard's unit in a joint mission to recover a Wraith data storage device in a hive-ship.
While aboard, Teyla and Tyrus were paired. When a cocooned man pleaded to be set free before a Wraith could feed on him, Tyrus killed him with his weapon. The internal alarms were activated as a result, alerting the awake Wraith soldiers of their presence. Tyrus took a Wraith stunner rifle discharge to the chest and face. Teyla was forced to retreat, unable to save him, but disturbed and dismayed with his behavior.
The loss of her father to the Wraith had a grave impact on Sora and the Genii people, who severed their potential alliance with the Atlantis Expedition. [1] Also, when Sora infiltrated Atlantis alongside a Genii strike team and was again confronted with Teyla, she attempted to avenge her father by challenging her to a fight, which she eventually lost.
