[edit] Localities
The suburb of Glen Waverley was historically known as Black Flat. It is generally bounded by Dandenong Creek to the East, Ferntree Gully Road to the South, Blackburn Road to the West and Highbury Road to the North. Springvale Road, a major North South distributor, divides the suburb. The geography varies from river flats adjacent to the Dandenong Creek in the East to hilly division between the Dandenong Creek and Scotchmans Creek catchments. Whilst first settled in the mid nineteenth century and later developed as orchards and farming lands, major development occurred in the 1950s to 1970s with rapid infilling of housing built to a generally high standard on large (typically 800m2) blocks. Much of that housing stock is now ageing and renewal is occurring, frequently involving dissection of the larger blocks into town house development.
Centro The Glen (informally known as simply "The Glen") is a local shopping centre owned by Centro Properties Group, which is located on the corner of Springvale Road and High Street Road. Although smaller than nearby shopping centres such as Knox or Chadstone, the Glen houses a reasonable collection of shops, including supermarkets (such as Coles and Safeway), department stores (Target and David Jones), a cosmopolitan food court and a number of smaller clothing stores. The addition of various new stores to The Glen has resulted in a total of over 150 shops, thus making the Glen Centro one of the most significant shopping centres in the vicinity.
The main street of Glen Waverley is Kingsway, where many locals go for a coffee or meal. In recent years Kingsway, has developed into a vibrant multi-cultural dining and entertainment area, with strong Asian influences on the food available. Because of Glen Waverley's lively social scene many restaurants and cafes do not close until 1 or 2am. Kingsway also is taken up by Century City Walk, a cinema multiplex. It houses various restaurants, cafés and a Village Cinema. On every Saturday from 3pm until 10pm there is a twilight market where there are various stalls including fashion, homewares, jewellery, giftware, music etc.
