Videoclip

Il videoclip (conosciuto in Italia anche come video musicale o anche semplicemente video o clip) è un breve filmato prodotto a scopo promozionale per un brano musicale, solitamente una canzone presente in tutta la lunghezza del video.
I videoclip utilizzano differenti forme stilistiche ed espressive per commentare visivamente il brano musicale: molti di essi si compongono della semplice riproduzione filmica del cantante o del gruppo musicale che performano il brano; altri creano minifilm con trama (recitati talvolta dagli stessi componenti del gruppo) oppure non narrativi e si possono avvalere di sequenze animate o di immagini documentaristiche.
La pratica di abbinamento di immagini filmate a brani musicali risale sin dagli anni cinquanta, ma il videoclip diviene molto popolare a partire dall'inizio degli anni ottanta con la nascita delle prime televisioni con palinsesto interamente musicale.

[modifica] Origine dei videoclip
Tra i precursori del videoclip contemporaneo si possono elencare i soundie (cortometraggi abbinati a brani musicali trasmessi da un rudimentale videojuke-box detto "panorama soundie" nei primi anni cinquanta negli Stati Uniti), gli scopitone (corrispettivi francesi dei soundie girati in technicolor e lanciati sul mercato nel 1964) e le performance che sopperivano all'assenza delle band in studio in alcuni celebri show televisivi degli anni sessanta come Ready Steady Go! (trasmesso dalla BBC) o l' Ed Sullivan Show.
Anche in Italia, a partire dal 1959, si sperimenta un juke-box ad immagini: il Cinebox, brevettato come "fonografo visivo" dalla Ottico Meccanica Italiana. Le prime pellicole del Cinebox, girate dal regista RAI Enzo Trapani, sono interpretate da Peppino Di Capri, Domenico Modugno, Johnny Dorelli, Renato Rascel, Giorgio Gaber, Gino Paoli, Edoardo Vianello e altri. Nel 1963 il Cinebox viene esportato sul mercato americano col nome di Colorama coinvolgendo star come Paul Anka e Neil Sedaka, ma in breve tempo l'esperimento è abbandonato.
Forme vicine al videoclip contemporaneo vengono realizzate da registi di fama dalla fine degli anni sessanta: ad esempio il video musicale del brano Subterranean Homesick Blues di Bob Dylan girato dal documentarista D.A. Pennebaker, che si avvale della presenza del poeta Allen Ginsberg come "figurante speciale". Nel 1975 i Queen realizzano un lungo videoclip, considerato il primo della storia, del loro brano Bohemian Rhapsody per il programma televisivo Top of the pops, mentre gli ABBA affidano al regista Lasse Hallström una serie di clip promozionali dei loro successi.

Con la nascita di MTV (che il 1 agosto 1981 ha ironicamente aperto le proprie trasmissioni con il videoclip Video Killed the Radio Star dei Buggles) e di altre televisioni musicali il videoclip ha assunto sempre maggiore importanza nelle strategie di lancio promozionale dei brani musicali e si è fortemente evoluto dal punto di vista artistico.
