The Shadow Creature, usually just called Darkness, is the evil, demonic brother of the Madam of Murder (and thus a major villain) in the webcomic Mayhem & Magic.

Darkness is a known menace to the citizens of Rune, though no citizen has ever seen his face and lived; it has been implied that he, like Black Mage of the Light Warriors, keeps his face hidden as it is too horrible to gaze upon. The Order of the Law have been hired to destroy Darkness by the Madam of Murder, who sees her brother as a threat to her rule. Both her and the Order are unaware that Darkness has allied with Martin the Wizard to destroy the Order of the Law together, with Martin agreeing to help Darkness take over Rune after all their enemies (including the Order of Good, the Order of the Law and the Angel Trio) are dead. He is currently manipulating Daven Almagic through his dreams into believing that the Order of the Law will have to save the Order of Chaos while searching for Darkness, knowing full well that the OoC is way too high-level and experienced for the OotL to beat single-handedly.

As a shadowy demon who lives for destruction, Darkness considers all of his "allies" as means to an end.
His most recent ally is the Order of the Law's archenemy, Martin the "Great Wizard". Darkness has promised to help Martin find the Hand of the Arch-Lich, provided that Martin first helps Darkness take over Rune and kill his sister, the Madam of Murder. However, while he knows that the Order of the Law has been charged by his sister to track him down, he is unaware that Martin has stolen one of his mysterious artifacts, the "Shadow Glass" (a mirror that can temporarily turn the user into a shadowy figure), and used it to swipe the Hand of Vecna right from under the nose of its previous owner (who just so happens to be the Madam of Murder).
[edit] Shadow Artifacts
In Darkness' castle, "Shadowsis", there is a hidden room that contains several Shadow Artifacts, pricless relics from the Material Plane that Darkness corrupted to his own ends, most of which have the word "Shadow" in their name. Martin has since found this room, revealing some of its contents.
Below is a list of the named artifacts Martin found.
- Shadow Gauntlets- Mysterious evil gloves that drain the power of the wearer, except when used by Darkness himself.
- Shadow Eye- A one-eyed visor often worn by Darkness as a sort of makeshift telescope.
- Shadow Blade- A sword that is possessed by the spirit of the warrior who wielded it before being killed by Darkness. Martin subsequently found this, and used it to cut off his left hand.
- Shadow Glass- A mirror that turns anyone who gazes at it into a shadow temporarily. Martin currently has this artifact, and used it to turn into a shadow and steal the Hand of the Undying King from the Madam of Murder.
- Shadow Trap- Less of an artifact than a booby-trap set by Darkness to keep intruders of his storage room. Martin was almost slit open by this spiky trap, but was able to channel a Fireball spell to destroy it.
