This is a list of other characters in the webcomic Mayhem & Magic besides the three Orders and Martin the Wizard.

Contents

[edit] Recurring Characters

[edit] Shady Guy

The Shady Guy is a salesman who claims to have knowledge of the Mysterious Person's dark past. He resembles an elf, but his true race and alignment cannot be discerned from appearance alone, much like the Mysterious Person's gender. True to his profession, the Shady Guy also sells various equipment to the Orders, most of which are actually household items given absurd and powerful-sounding names (like a walking stick being "The Rod of Eternal Wisdom").[1] He lives in Darkness' castle in "Shadowsis", an evil version of the Mayhem & Magic city Rune (a parody of Sigil), located in the Elemental Plane of Shadow.

[edit] The Three Arch-Fiends

The Arch-Fiends
Publisher Numbuh3.14
First appearance Mayhem & Magic #61
Created by Numbuh3.14
Characteristics
Alter ego Hate, Trickery, Despair
Affiliations Order of Chaos
Abilities Immortality, demonic presence, can control the hate and despair of others, can manipulate people into lying

The Three Arch-Fiends are the self-proclaimed Guardians of Hell and the antitheses of the Angel Trio. They are responsible for sending Shadow Demon and the Mysterious Person to Earth; in fact, it was the Arch-Fiends who instilled in MP the hate and negativity for which (s)he is well-known. In Strip #61, the Order of Chaos is seemingly "killed" by Martin (who now controls the all-powerful Hand of Vecna), and is sent to Hell where they meet the Arch-Fiends.

The Arch-Fiends consist of:

  • Hate- The personification of Hate, he is in charge of all sarcasm and anger in the world. As such, he often displays a sarcastic demeanor of his own. He was the Mysterious Person's mentor before (s)he was sent to Earth in search of the Hand of the Arch-Lich.
  • Trickery- The master of lies and an expert in the Bluff skill. It is near-impossible at times to tell if anything that Trickery says is the truth (and it almost never is).
  • Despair- Having been placed in charge of sadness and pessimism by the Lord Demon of Hell, Despair takes his job very seriously and never laughs or cracks a smile. He and Hate work as slave-drivers to ensure that none of the tortured spirits get their hopes up about being resurrected on Earth.

[edit] King Raetura

The honorable King Raetura (his name pronounced RAY-shruh) is the employer of the Order of Good and thus the ruler of the town of Sistenn. The king has sent the Order of Good out on a sacred mission: to defeat the evil wizard Martin, who terrorized the town long before any of the Order of Good even existed. Raetura has a bond of friendship with the leader of the Order, Davrin Ursefrane, who reminds the king of his young son (who is also an adventuring fighter).

[edit] Vecna, the Arch-Lich

The lich king Vecna, being a deity, is the most evil force in the world and the patron deity of both the Mysterious Person and his/her opposite number, Shadow Demon. Acting as a stereotypical evil usurper, the Arch-Lich usually says his part, then leaves the strip with a malicious laugh. It is also his Hand that the Mysterious Person sought in order to gain its untold power, before the Hand was stolen by Martin. Vecna encourages the rivalry between the Mysterious Person and Shadow Demon, as he is eager to see them kill each other in combat. He also despises using his dark and potentially "doom-wreaking magic capable of rendering human flesh[2]" to heal the wounds of the Mysterious Person's lawful/neutral teammates.

[edit] Minor Characters

[edit] Assassins

A trio of assassins named Major (a clever fighter), Dimon (a lady in a ninja-suit), and Skyfire (a rogueish teenager) were sent by an unknown employer to defeat the Order of Chaos (though Dimon was first seen in Comic #18 fighting the Order of the Law by herself). However, the three were quickly outclassed by the use of a powerful spell by the Order's leader, Silventread Firebane. The three assassins were shocked to discover Silven's use of magic, as they had only learned he was a rogue, and were unaware of his adoption of the sorcerer class. The three ran off after Mysteria suggested bowing at the Order of Chaos' feet, which the assassins didn't seem too interested in doing; it is likely that they have given up assassinating, after their fateful encounter with the Order of Chaos.

[edit] The Dragon

While he appears to be just an average, fire-spewing dragon to the heroes he meets, The Dragon is actually a cultured, British-speaking gentleman. Appearing in only three comics (Strips #49, #50, and #51), the Dragon fought the Order of the Law, only managing to come out on top because Mysterious Person (who had heard the Dragon possessed the Hand of Vecna, and was trying to find it) refused to heal his/her teammates' burn wounds. The Dragon retreated, meaning that the Order of the Law won the battle, but the Dragon secretly wished he wouldn't have had to run off as he did.

[edit] Rune-related Characters

In Strip #53, the Order of the Law visit Rune, the Mayhem & Magic equivalent of the D&D town Sigil. Several minor characters are introduced there in the form of citizens.

[edit] The Angel Trio

[edit] Darkness

[edit] Madam of Murder

Madam of Murder
Publisher Numbuh3.14
First appearance Mayhem & Magic #53
Created by Numbuh3.14
Characteristics
Affiliations Sigil, The Angel Trio (Love, Friendship, & Destiny)
Notable aliases The Madam of Murder
Abilities Immortality, fearsome powers, able to channel life (i.e. make anyone she chooses immortal, or make them die) at will

The Madam of Murder is Rune's answer to Sigil's Lady of Pain. Whereas the Lady of Pain eternally tortures those who anger her (for example, with the Mazes), the Madam simply kills them, hence her title. She is absolute ruler of Rune, and no one seeks to overthrow her for fear of being killed themselves. She also created the Angel Trio (consisting of the embodiments of Love, Friendship, and Destiny), with the spiritual embodiment of Love serving as a surrogate sister for the Madam herself. The Angel Trio, like all citizens of Rune, respect the Madam without question since they are aware that, even though she gave the three of them immortality, she could just as easily take that immortality back. She recently hired the Order of the Law to take out Darkness, who is a known menace to her and the Rune citizens. She has also secretly made a pact with the Mysterious Person; though the specific details of that pact were unknown, it was revealed[3] shortly afterward that their agreement has something to do with MP obtaining the Hand of the Arch-Lich (or the Hand of the Everlasting One, as the Madam calls it) from the Madam after the Order destroys Darkness.

[edit] The Temple of Rune Oracle

A female oracle (similar to the male Oracle of Sunken Valley, although human) whom the Order of the Law sought to learn the location of "Shadowsis", Darkness' lair. The OotL arrived just as the Order of Chaos had finished visiting with the Oracle, and the two Orders would have engaged in battle if not fort he Oracle's timely intervention. The members of the Order of the Law (starting with Mysta) each asked one question of the Oracle. Daven's question was as to the location of Shadowsis, but the Oracle had already been expecting this question and so answered accordingly but ambiguously, as befitting an oracle. The Oracle is depicted as a spirit sitting cross-legged in flames. These flames are real, though they do not hurt those who attempt to touch them, as Silverhead did.
