[edit] The Cobra Club/The Market Cellar
The club was originally opened in 1996 and was named Cobra Club. It was owned by George Palmer. Huw Edwards and Lenny Wallace were employed as the barmen. After the club was raided by the police in 1997, the Cobra Club closed, but was reopened later in the year and renamed The Market Cellar. The club was actually used to facilitate George's money laundering operations and illegal gambling. Later George's daughter, Annie Palmer, took over the running of the club and she also started a loan shark business from inside the club with Phil Mitchell and Conor Flaherty.
[edit] e20
The club was later given the name of e20 by Steve Owen, after he had purchased the premises in 1998 from Annie Palmer. It was named after the Walford postcode, London E20. Lenny Wallace was employed as a barman and Matthew Rose was the DJ. Billy Mitchell was also employed to work in the club and was given 1% ownership by Steve.
The opening day of e20 was the 14th February 1999, Valentine's Day, and Steve's obsessive ex-girlfriend turned up and started taunting him and then began knocking him around until she finally tried to strangle him with his tie. In self-defence he reached for the heaviest object - an ashtray - and hit her over the head. Matthew Rose who was a witness to the murder was framed by Steve for the murder and sent to prison. After release Matthew took revenge on Steve by tying him up in the club and threatening to set the club on fire but it was later revealed he was only trying to scare Steve and turn him into an emotional wreck.
Steve married Melanie Healy in 2001, and so she became a supposed owner of the club, though this wasn't correct, it was only in writing. Later, Dan Sullivan kidnapped Melanie as revenge on Steve for aiding playing apart in his imprisonment. After she was finally released from capture, she decided to torch the e20 to get back at for Steve for the lies he had told. As a result, the club needed to be completely rebuilt.
Steve sold off the e20 to his friend Beppe di Marco, on the same day as his anniversary, and the day he died in a car crash. Mel left, and the e20 was reopened in 2002 as Angie's Den by Sharon Watts.
[edit] Angie's Den
Angie's Den was named after Sharon's mother, Angie Watts and apparently deceased father, Den. Initial employees were Sam Mitchell and Billy Mitchell (who also owned 1% of the club). Later Dennis Rickman came to work there and helped run the club with Sharon. When Den Watts resurfaced he managed the club and his feud with the Mitchell's led to both Sam and Billy being sacked. This feud later led to Angie's Den being burnt down, by Billy Mitchell on 16 January 2004, without realising that Vicki Fowler was inside. Billy then rescued her, but after an explosion that rocked the club, it had to be closed down. Suspecting fowl play the insurance company refused to pay out for the damage, which nearly led to Sharon selling the remains of the club to Sam (who had coerced her cousin Billy to torch it in the first place). Den came home from a holiday in Spain with the necessary funds and so the Watts held onto the club. It was refurbished and Sharon reopened it. Kareena Ferreira and Lisa Fowler worked here briefly as barstaff and so did Juley Smith, but he was sacked for selling drugs.
When Sharon decided to flee Walford to start a new life with Dennis in 2004, she sold Angie's Den to Johnny Allen.
[edit] Scarlet
In 2005 Johnny Allen bought the club and named it Scarlet after his daughter, who had died in a fire the previous year. Initial employees included Danny Moon, Jake Moon and Billy Mitchell. In 2006 Johnny decided to leave Albert Square.
Johnny's one-time fling, Amy then took over for just a few months, but it proved unpopular for a young woman to be manager. Mike Swann also had a very brief spell as manager. In April 2006 after Johnny was imprisoned for murder, his young daughter Ruby was given the club. Jake Moon was given the role of manager by Johnny and Grant Mitchell ran the club with him for several months. Jake and Grant both left, leaving Ruby and her boyfriend Sean Slater running the club. Ruby tried to employ Wayne Thomas to work as a manager but after Sean got angry at him he was not seen again. Ruby then left Walford for good and the future of the club remains uncertain at present.
