United Utilities (UU) (LSE: UU.) is a British utility company with its headquarters in Warrington which operates mainly in the North West England. It is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index and employs 17,000 people.
United Utilities was created in 1995 by the merger of North West Water and the Regional Electricity Company Norweb. Its shares are listed on both the London Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange (in the form of ADRs). It has around 2.9 million customers for its core water and electricity businesses.
United Utilities principal activities are managing and operating the regulated electrical distribution network , water and wastewater networks in north west England, a region with a population of around 7 million. In August 2000 United Utilities sold its electricity and gas supply business and as a result no longer has any significant exposure to the competitive UK generation and supply market . As well as operating utility networks in the north west, the group also owns two support services businesses: United Utilities Contract Solutions and Vertex - Business Process Outsourcing. These businesses apply the group's core skills of infrastructure management and business process management in the provision of services to others.
United Utilities is also a significant landowner especially within the Lake District National Park.
