Royal & SunAlliance (LSE: RSA) is a British general insurance company.
The company was formed following the merger of Sun Alliance and Royal in 1996, and the acquisition of AMEV in 1997. Sun Alliance was itself a product of the merger of several insurance companies during the 20th century, including The Sun, the Alliance Assurance, Phoenix Assurance, Century Insurance, London Assurance, National Vulcan etc. It is the oldest general insurer still operating under part of its original name at the time of its foundation; The Sun opened for insurance business in 1710.
R&SA provides insurance products and services in 130 countries and operates in 27 countries and has over 20 million policyholders. It is the 2nd largest general insurer in the United Kingdom with its headquarters in the City of London in Leadenhall Street (UK) and Fenchurch Street(Global), and other key UK offices in Horsham and Liverpool. R&SA owns the successful More Th>n brand in the United Kingdom recognised widely for its former Lucky The Dog advertisements and its current MORE IS... ads.
It also has major operations in Scandinavia including the Codan and Trygg Hansa brands, and Canada. It was the first foreign insurance company allowed to conduct business in China in the 1990s.
It is listed on LSE and formerly the NYSE, although in late 2006 it de-listed from the NYSE due to the sale of all of its United States operations. The Company's formal exit from the USA was announced on 5th March 2007, following unsuccessful legal challenges to the sale in the courts of Delaware, USA.
The Company is a component of the FTSE 100 Index, as one of Britain's 100 most valuable publicly-traded companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.
The current CEO of the Company is Andy Haste, voted as The Independent newspapers' City business person of the year 2006 in the insurance sector. Mr Haste was commended by City analysts for turning the insurer into a profit making venture.
