Districts of Andhra Pradesh.

West Godavari (పశ్చిమ గోదావరి) is a district in Andhra Pradesh in India. The headquarters is the town of Eluru. The district had a population of 3,803,517 of which 9.74% were urban as of 2001. [1]

Other important places in the district are Akividu, Bhimavaram, Narsapur, Palakollu, Kovvur, Tallapudi, Tanuku, Tadepalligudem, Jangareddigudem and Koyyalagudem.

The district is located in delta region of the Krishna and Godavari rivers. Khammam District lies to the north, East Godavari District to the east, the Bay of Bengal to the south, and Krishna District to the west.

Rich in Agriculture. Rice, Sugar are important crops. Most of the people belongs to agriculture & education is moderate in the people. Most People live in villages. Urbanisation is less as most people live in remote areas. Sea food cultivation is also important in the district. Tanuku is famous for Andhra Sugar Factory. Ceramics was another industry developed in the district. There is a jute mill in the district headquarters i.e, Eluru. ONGC had footage at Narsapuram. Apart of this, there is no significant industrialization in the district. Backward community economy & living conditions are deplorable. Most of them works as agriculture labour or in gulf countries. Meagre earning capacity driving them towards cities like Hyderabad, Vizag.

Still conventional techniches are followed by farmers & dependence on labour for agricultural works.Modernization in agricultire is not developed as like Punjab & Haryana.

Economy is mostly agricultural based.

Kolleru lake, one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia and habitat for up to 50,000 resident and migratory birds, is located partially within the district. The temples in Bhimavaram (Bhimarama) and Palakol (KsheeraRama), part of Pancharama temples, are piligrim centres in West Godavari. Bhimavaram is also well known for prawn feed centres and considered to be commercial capital of west godavari.

Antarvedi(East Godavari District) is famous for the temple of Sri Laxmi Narasimha Swamy, built during the 15th -16th centuries. Antarvedi is located 10 km from Narsapuram, at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and Godavari River. The experience of the trip from Narsapuram to Antarvedi by a steamer boat during rainy season when the river is flooded with water is memorable.

Perupalem Beach is a famous beach in the district situated 18 kms from Narsapuram& 20 kms from bhimavaram. In the November & December lacs of people visit this place. Here, Velankani Mata temple a big church is there.

Pattiseema near by Kovvur is also famous tourist attraction centre. Here god shiva is famous.

Dwaraka Tirumala near by Eluru is a famous pilgrimage centre of Balaji Venkateswara Swamy.

Ksheeraramalingeswara Swamy Temple in the town of Palakol is one of the kshetra lingas.

Rice Research Centre in the village of Maruteru or Martair is well known for its research work in developing new and improved varieties of paddy. The Lord Venkateswara temple located in the village of Maruteru is also known as Aabothu ( Bull ) Tirupathi.

Penugonda is a famous pilgrimage center of Sri Vasavi Kanyakaparameswari Temple

[edit] Seasons and Climate

The region mostly has a tropical climate like the rest of the Coastal Andhra region. The summers (March-June) are very hot and humid with practically non-existent winters. The rainy season (July-Jan) is the best time to visit this place with the fields brilliantly green with paddy crops, rivulets flowing with water and the sun shining brightly, but not burning as it does in the summer. The regions has long been home to Indian nobles due to its climate and fertile soil, and several zamindar mansions are scattered around the Godavari area.
