Wikipedia:WikiProject Central Asia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Welcome to WikiProject Central Asia. This project aims to expand, cleanup and wikify, better organize, and neutralize the point of view on articles related to Central Asia, a vast landlocked region of Asia with both a rich culture and history. For centuries Central Asia has been home to various classifications of Turkic and Iranian peoples as well as Mongols and Tibetans. Small but significant minorites such as Russians and Han Chinese also live in the region. Islam is the predominant religion (mostly of the Sunni sect), followed by Tibetan Buddhism. There are also small pockets of Christians, Bukharan Jews, and Hindus as well. The usual definition of the region encompasses Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, western Pakistan (North West Frontier Province and Baluchistan), Xinjiang, Tibet, Central Asian portions of Russia, and Khorasan, Iran. It is hoped that topics regarding these areas will be enhanced through this project as well as the knowledge of fellow Wikipedians and outside readers. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page.
[edit] Goals
- To create a body of articles that accurately depicts the history and cultures of Central Asia and Central Asian peoples.
- To standardize articles on Central Asia and Central Asian subjects with similar layouts and formatting.
- To standardize the use of local-language terms, names, and translations into English across the series.

[edit] Current events
With the death of Saparmurat Niyazov on December 21, 2006, the situation on the ground in Turkmenistan may change rapidly, and will change the timbre of the region in any case. This is going to be a busy next few weeks for our Project. Chris 03:31, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Absolutely - I'm on it already, but I have to deal with it in more than one way. In another role, I'm a volunteer editor of English documents and press releases for a few of the major Turkmen political opposition organizations. Because of that, that's where my first attentions will go, so I might not be around so much. Aelfthrytha 06:35, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
I don't believe its anywhere in Wikipedia, though I could be wrong, but the election is scheduled for February 11, 2007, according to the Turkmen Embassy in Washington. So perhaps there should be some mention of it, perhaps an article as is the norm for every other major national election? Kaiser matias 20:32, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Other suggested work
- Looking at "What links here" for Central Asian-related articles can often turn up uncategorised Central Asian articles. Categorizing them will put them somewhere where they can be accessed for improvement.
- Attaching our newly created WikiProject Template to Central Asia-related articles.
- Making contact with people currently in Central Asian countries to request use of their photographs or to request that they take photographs for us. Sites such as these [www.flickr.com] [www.photobucket.com] might be places to look for people.
