Nahuatl

Nahuatl er koncentreret i den syøstlige del af Mexico, dvs. provinserne Guerrero, Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosí og Veracruz.

Nahuatl er et af de uto-aztekiske sprog. Det tales stadig af lidt under 1,5 millioner mennesker i det oprindelige sprogområde ved Mexico City. Historisk taltes Nahuatl blandt andre af aztekerne.

Dansk og mange andre sprog har i øvrigt lånt ord fra nahuatl:

• "Chokolade" hedder xocolatl
• "Tomat" hedder tomatl
• "Avocado" hedder ahuacatl
• "Mexico" hedder mexihco
• "Ozelot" (vildkattetype) hedder ocelotl.
• "Chili" hedder chilli.
• "Coyote" (prærieulv) hedder coyotl.
• "Guacamole" hedder ahuacamolli.
• "Mole sauce" hedder molli (sovs, pasta).
• "Guatemala" hedder cuauhtemallan.
• "Kakao" hedder cacahuatl.
• "Tamale" hedder tamalli.
