Centerpoint Mall (Toronto)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Centerpoint Mall is a suburban mall in northern Toronto, Ontario. Opened in 1966 at the corner of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue as a 50 store mall called Towne and Countrye Square and renamed sometime in the 1980s. Prior to 1964, the location was slated to be the site of a 37 store strip mall anchored by the Sayvette Department Store and Super City grocery store in 1961. The mall is now managed by Morguard Investments.
The malls early tenants include:
- Miracle Mart
- Marks and Spencers
- Loblaws
- Big Steel
- Woolco
- Famous Players
The mall has undergone changes; the original Loblaws (earlier known as Super City) location was demolished and is now occupied by Zellers. The old Woolco (earlier Sayvette) store was later occupied by Zellers; later demolished to make way for the Super Centre and re-branded Loblaws. The Miracle Mart discount department store was closed by the parent Steinberg chain in the late 1970's and renovated to become a Canadian Tire store.
The Bay store was constructed in the early 1970's, along with an extension of the mall and addition of new stores and a restaurant.
Current retailers include:
- BMO Bank of Montreal
- Pickle Barrel
- Canadian Tire
- Shopper's Drug Mart

[edit] Reference
The Centrepoint Mall is still standing strong today (2007) despite the high-end emergence of supermalls near and around the area (ie Promenade Mall in Thornhill). The stores cater mainly to lower-middle class income earners. Having only one level, the stores tend to be all inclusive, from a quick Yogen Fruz smoothie, to a Second Cup coffee without having to take your stroller up any escalators. The mall does have a second floor set of offices (via elevator near the Pickle Barrel) and is relatively baby friendly, with two changing tables - one near the food centre, and one within the Zellers washrooms.
