[edit] DVD Overview
Stargate SG-1 was released on DVD in the UK in volumes, but began with "The Best of Season 1", so Season 1 was not actually released on DVD in volumes. Some fans were upset by this, so MGM Home Entertainment (UK) decided to release complete Season box-sets, as well as continuing with the volume releases.
Due to this, The Box-sets do not make sense when looking at the volume numbers. Since Season One was released after "The Best of Season 1", it contains discs labeled 1 to 5. "The Best of Season 1" having been released first was numbered as volume 1 while the Season Two box-set contains volumes 2 through 7, Season Three contains volumes 8 through 13 and Season Four contains 14 through 19 (and so on through the later seasons). It's because of this that fans or collectors of the Box-sets will notice the very obvious error in the volume order. Anyone who would want to complete the volumes would also need to buy "The Best of Season 1" in order to have each proper volume despite already having those episodes in the Season One Box-set.
Those fans who wanted to buy the complete Season box-sets would have to wait almost 6 months longer than those collecting the volumes. All the Season 9 volumes have now been released [44-49] (Season 9), and the box-set for Season 9 became available on October 3, 2006. According to Gord Lacey at tvshowsondvd.com the release of Stargate SG-1 Season 9 was being held up due to the fact that MGM is changing its home distribution company from Sony to Fox.
When the Season 8 set was initially released in North America, volume 5 shipped with the 45 minute version of "Threads" that was used for syndication and repeats. Stargate fans were angry with MGM over the choice to include the cut version instead of the 63 minute version, as this version aired on the UK television station Sky One and also included on the Region 2 DVDs. MGM said that issuing the shorted version was a mistake that would be fixed in subsequent production of the set and that they would announce a trade in policy for fans who wanted a volume 5 disc with the full 63 minute version. On November 17th 2005, tvshowsondvd.com posted information about the trade-in program, the Season 8 box sets for sale have the full, restored 63 minute version of 'Threads' as MGM promised. It is unknown if there is a way to tell sets which have the shorted and longer version apart.
The Region 4 version of Season 8 also had a production problem in that in the original issuing of the set the fifth disc ("Reckoning" 1 & 2 and "Threads") actually contained the contents of the first disc despite being labelled otherwise. Fans were able to take the DVDs back to the store of purchase and have them exchange the erroneous disc with the distributors.
On occasion, the box sets have had episodes in an order different to that in which they originally aired. With Season 2, "Spirits" appears before instead of after "The Tok'ra" 1 & 2, and "A Matter Of Time" and "The Fifth Race" are switched in order, as are "Serpent's Song" and "Holiday". Season 8 too has a couple of episodes out of broadcast order.
[edit] Original Season Box Sets
Seasons 1 through 8 were originally released in boxsets that contained five discs in amaray cases; season 9 was not and was originally released in the new ultra-slim cases in Region 1.
This seems to have caused a few isses with fans of Stargate who collect the box-sets as these new covers look out of place with older seasons [1].
The box set releases in Region 4 followed the box art and amaray case style of the Region 1 releases, although the 'Season X' part with custom five-sided 'glyph' was altered on Seasons 1 to 7 to just text in order to make space for the Australian censor's rating. With a change in the censor labels the Season 8 box set was able to feature the 'glyph' for the first time. Season 9's Region 4 release seems to have gotten a release using standard amaray cases, meaning people would need to import potentially incompatible discs to keep the sets the same (due to the PAL/NTSC and DVD Region differences). Although this remained the same, the box art was altered to become similar to the box art of the later Region 2 releases and marked the first time that Sony was credited on a box set.

[edit] Re-Released Boxsets
On April 3, 2006, Sony Home Entertainment (US) announced that they would be re-releasing Seasons 1 - 8 of Stargate SG-1 in a reduced boxset size like that of Season 1 of Stargate Atlantis. There has been upset by some collectors who now claim that when Seasons 9 and 10 are released on DVD, their collection will look disproportionate, because the former design boxsets have five discs in amaray cases and the new boxsets use ultra-slim cases.
