[edit] Hello there
Hello there.. real nice work on the map of India. It would be great if you enhance it with a couple of things (as time permits) it would be great: [1] create a version with standard map colors as per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Maps - which could make it enter into the atlas wikiproject as well. [2] make available a SVG version, along with a blank map (no text at all - this would make your work usable across wiki projects and those that use different languages). Keep up the good work :-) Thanks & Cheers! --ΜιĿːtalk 07:29, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- noted, im a little short of time and get net access only on sundays, so it could be a while before i get all those done--PlaneMad 13:10, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Maps
Hi! I've noticed your nice maps being circulated around wikipedia. I have a few points to add:
- Wikipedia is moving towards .svg type maps rather than .png. Please would you make maps in this format?
- The LoC in Kashmir appears to be incorrect.
- The CC licence and the Indian Wikiproject logo should not appear on the maps.
Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:59, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
- i dont think its possible to add text in svg, atleast it doesnt seem to be working for me in illustrator.
The loc was traced from one of the available maps, if you can point me to some maps with accurate position of the loc, i shall fix them.
once i fix the loc, ill update the maps without including the logo, no problem.--PlaneMad 13:08, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maps
I saw the maps you created on the Commons. I was awestruck! Maps like Image:Railway network schematic map.png were simply too fantabulous. Is that Indian maps wikiproject on the Commons still on? It would be great if sometime you could take a look at the requested history of India maps. Regards, deeptrivia (talk) 14:01, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maps
Thanks for the compliment and good luck on the state's maps. I had planned to make the state locator maps, but unfortunately don't have much time on my hands these days. Once you do finish with the states, could I request you to make the map on the lines of Image:Map of USA with state names.svg? Another thing, if you don't mind: could you dual licence the derivatives under GFDL, cc-by-sa 1.0,2.0,2.5? It would make it compatible with all wikimedia projects. Thanks and regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:15, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Railway Map
Hi,
I see the excellent work you've done on Image:Railway_network_schematic_map.png! I've just got a little bit of feedback for you:
- Jalandhar has been misspelt (see Punjab, where it is spelt Jalandher)
- For the key, all the words begin with a capital except for the Metre guage line. Seems slightly inconsistent.
- In the key, I think it should read Headquarters and not just Headquarter.
I hope my feedback helped! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 12:07, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing it out. will be updating the map in a month. if you notice any more typos pls notify me.

[edit] POV
It's not what the world maps potray that matters, but what is claimed and counterclaimed as part of it's territory. I was doubtful on the middle sectors, but there are no clear and unambigious indications of it being resolved. (Rediff-2003), TNI. Unless we have clear and explicit official statements by both sides, we'd have to stick to the 1988 version. From the forum there seems to be a pro-India tilt (quite understandable). But the map just states that region 1 is undisputed, region 2 is claimed by India, and region 3 is claimed by China. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:08, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

This is regarding the map if West Bengal — Image:India West Bengal locator map.svg. As I told you, the map does not show all the districts. And I have not been able to find out a proper map on the web. However, I have found out a way ro build a proper map.
See this map. Now go to this website, and download "List of AC Name" from "Download data". An excel file will be downloaded listing all the assembly constituencies with their districts. From this data and the map, a map showing east and west Midnapur can be developed. What do you think?
I do not know how to create maps. So I request you to kindly see into the matter and help develope a correct map. Thabks a lot. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:21, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] India roadway map
Hi,
Why don't you nominate India roadway map.svg as SPC on enwiki. I am sure it will get selected. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 09:42, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- Oops. Didn't see you had already done that. Anyways, great map. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Why
The reason is no one helps me in my research. I have requested articles about India Import Tax, India Export Tax; but, to no avail.
I want to also know how much it costs for shipping 1 ton from India to Canada.
There more than a million categories in Wikipedia which are so redundant and the admins are slacking; lol;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Categories
Lastly I was wondering if there were any indicators to the housing market in India esp. Mumbai (Bombay), like how Canada and US has; for example US states that housing is going into recession, and in Canada it is split by provinces with the Western Provinces booming, and eastern provinces like Ontario will go into recession. --Endgame1 12:15, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
I do not know of any specific indicators which indicate the direction in which home prices are going. But real estate market in India is booming. This article talks about the future of real-estate in India. But each city has different trends. For example This article talks about prices in Chandigarh. - Aksi_great (talk) 15:20, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Locator Dot.svg
Thanks for uploading Image:Locator Dot.svg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 09:06, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] India road map
I am absolutely in awe of your work on the Indian road map. It inspired me to - stupidly and insanely, I'm sure - attempt the same with the United States. What program(s) did you use? Inkscape, or another SVG program? --Golbez 11:37, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- I let my insanity get the better of me, fired up Illustrator, and started working on this. I'm placing cities first, I figured that would make drawing the highways easier. How did you go about it? The main reason, however, for this comment is to ask how you drew the highways. I've never used Illustrator before, just had a copy of the suite around, and I'm trying to draw the double line style that you use. I've turned it into a brush and use the drawing tool or line tool, but unless it's a very simple curve, the sides get distorted. How did you do it? Thank you very much for any help you can give! --Golbez 22:56, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- LOOK! LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO! ahem. But anyway. Thanks for all your help so far, I have yet another question. Where roads intersect, I notice you have like a T intersection - that is, the line has a gap in it for the new road. Er, good example on your map is the beltway around Chennai, or the intersection of highway 7 and future highway 18 near Kumool. How did you do that, did you link the paths together or manually draw it or what? Thanks again. --Golbez 03:29, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox
Yes, you have a good idea there. I was actually working on an updated infobox at User:Saravask/Sandbox (see User:Saravask/Test for example) in order to update the code and clean up problems with the map/skyline alignment and give it a neater appearance (like they've been doing at {{Infobox Australian Place}}). I think your design for {{Infobox Chennai place}} *much* neater, so I'll integrate its code (including params) into my sandbox today. Or if you want us to work out of {{Infobox Chennai place}} instead, then move it to {{Infobox Indian Place}}, that's fine too. Thanks. Saravask 18:53, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, but if you hadn't drawn the actual map, then what I did would look like this! You must be much better at it though, since you managed to do this; I still can't figure out how you could use the tracing engine to render so finely without doing manual manipulation.

[edit] Maps
Hi. I need the maps. One map is for the Rashtrakuta Dynasty at their peak. The current map on the Rashtrakuta Dynasty page shows their early territories. I have scanned the map from "John Keay, History of India, 2000, Grove publications, New York, ISBN 0-8021-3797-0" page 198. The second map is for the ancient 4-5th century Kadamba Empire of Karnataka. The source is "George M. Moraes (1931), The Kadamba Kula, A History of Ancient and Medieval Karnataka, Asian Educational Services, New Delhi, Madras, 1990 ISBN 81-206-0595-0" page 47. [edit] Kannauj Triangle
Thanks for the map. Just one request, the map does not show the Rashtrakuta territory including Kannauj, which It should. The Rashtrakutas captured Kannauj multiple times under Dhruva Dharavarsha, Govinda III and Indra III. They held Kannauj longest under Indra III. The north-west boundry also seems a bit narrow compared to the map I sent you. They also had complete control over the western sea board. Could you extend the boundary slightly to the left so the west coast is does not appear left out?. Sorry for being picky. Thanks.Dineshkannambadi 00:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Also, for some reason, when I insert the map in the Box in the Rashtrakuta Dynasty page, it does not show up, instead I see a blank. What is he reason for this? Is it the resolution on my monitor?Dineshkannambadi 00:49, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Maps
Thanks for the trouble you are taking. Actually, the format now being followed in India History Maps has the modern Indian states in the background like the map in Vijayanagara Empire. Can you follow this format. I had mentioned this earlier. Also, it is preferred that the names of too many places not appear on the map as it confuses the reader (especially those not from India) . Only the regal capital of the Empire should be present on the map. Is it too late to do this switch? I hope you can change it now.Dineshkannambadi 13:16, 27 March 2007 (UTC) If you have any problems, please talk to user:Nichalp and he can help you.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 13:20, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Some guidelines to follow for current format of maps, 1. Avoid names of multiple towns as it confuses readers. Onlt the regal capital is needed.
2. Use current Political map of India as background showing state boundaries for context.
3. No need to specifically show feudatory ruling families (minor chieftains under major kingdom) as it confuses readers not acquainted with history. They are essentially considered a part of the empire and should not be explicitly depicted.
4. In the Rashtrakuta map, even showing the Pala and Gurjara's is not necessary as it may lead to conflicts. Other authors may depict their empire maps differently and this may cause conflict between users, holding up articles (please see the Pala maps in Pala Dynasty article to get an idea what I mean). Only Rashtrakuta mapp is enough.
good examples of this format are Hoysala Empire, Vijayanagara Empire etc Hope you dont have to repeat the process and spend too much of your valuable time.Dineshkannambadi 13:57, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] maps
Hi. Thanks for all your help. Sorry for this nit picking. Regarding the format of maps, user:Nichalp an experienced admin had suggested we use the type that exists in Vijayanagara Empire / Hoysals Empire. So we followed suit. Please talk to him about the rivers in the map issue. Its best if the cartographers get together and hash out a policy, atleast for India related maps.
Hi Dinesh, i can modify the map quite easily. I merely made a replica of the maps you had sent me since you did not mention what you did or did not want included. But i do want to voice my suggestions to the map format in use:
- As a map, i feel that any important city in the empire should be marked, after all the map available here is a free version of a copyright map and we should include all possible details. The capital city can be marked much more prominently so that it can be clearly seen in the infobox.
Reply--> I am fine with this too except we want to avoid conflict regarding what is important and what is not. This can become an issue with large imperial empires who may have had several viceroyalties, important places of architecture, in addition to the main regal capital. The fewer opportunities we give for conflict , he better.Dineshkannambadi 20:01, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- I feel rivers add more to a historical map than modern state borders, which bear no connection to previous kingdoms, so i dont see how it may add to the context.
Reply--> You are right about the rivers, but people do tend to associate geography with todays political maps. An overlay of rivers over state boundaries is also not unacceptable.Dineshkannambadi 20:01, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
No problem, was just replicating the given map.
Reply ThanksDineshkannambadi 20:01, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Will do. I will split it into three seperate maps.
Reply Thanks Dineshkannambadi 20:01, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
At the end of the day, I dont think there is a "best format" and I am flexible about all this. I was merely pointing out what had been recommended on my previous FA's. Under any circumstance, Thanks for all your efforts.Dineshkannambadi 20:04, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Pics
Your two pics of the newly introduced deluxe buses on the MTC have visually enhanced the page. Keep up the good work!! The Silent Contributor 16:11, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- I believe that with their orange colours, the new low-floor buses might make a good pic. Btw, TSC is what people on Wikipedia seem to be calling me. Wonder why!!! The Silent Contributor 16:22, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, great pics!! The Silent Contributor 16:53, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] POV
Actually it does. I had a chat with Jimbo about this in August (wrt Chinese historical maps). And he feels so that the situation should be accurately depicted despite it being historical. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:11, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- The maps shows Pakistani and Chinese jurisprudence (ie continuity) in Kashmir which is disputed by India. Similarly with claims to AP and Kashmir. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:05, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re
Since I have time today, I can write the map chooser code. But please clarify what you mean by "geo template" (you mean the coords/dms template(s))? Thanks. Saravask 19:20, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, good job on the infobox.
- I was putting off trying to decide whether we should create separate x1, x2, y1, and y2 chooser templates or just bulk-choose all the locator code for each map (so that, in the future, we can have different formulae for maps using different projections, etc.). I guess we could create a separate formula chooser in the future if needed (keeping the coords templates you created), so the way it is now is OK.
- Have you seen the "pushpin" map as used in {{Infobox City}}? That might be a good alternative to raw superposition.
Thanks for the help. Saravask 13:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Many city articles have a large city map displayed with a much smaller thumbnail (pushpin) map of the country or state, with the location marked. See the map for San Jose, California, where they did this manually. What we are now doing at WP:IIJ is just displaying the pushpin map (all of India) without the option of making it smaller (in order to display next to a much larger city map). This is not a big issue here, as most Indian city articles don't have city maps, but might be in the future. Saravask 13:34, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Looks like we can just rip the code from {{Infobox City}}; I can try this later today. Thanks. Saravask 14:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] PSD & AI
Hi! I created Image:Goamap.png in Photoshop and have the PSD files with me. Since you work in Illustrator, is it possible to open the PSD layers there and rasterize it for svg conversion? =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:00, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks! Is 22 MB ok for you download? If so I'll put it up tomorrow. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:08, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Coords
Thanks. I was trying to at least get places like Mumbai and Gangtok (which are are halfway down the map and at nearly opposite ends of India) to align: before, Mumbai was appearing inland while Gangtok was virtually outside of Sikkim. I was going to try to write a more accurate conversion formula for the mercator and conical maps (like these), but then I learned that MediaWiki doesn't support trig. Saravask 20:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- I put in pog-switching code; if you have other ideas, please share. Thanks. Saravask 20:28, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] State locator maps
Saravask has done a great job getting the inset India map on the infobox. The locator on the inset map is slightly off-target, see Mylapore. Can you please make new state locator maps similar to the Nichalp's version of the India map. That should ensure the dots show up at the right places. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 17:10, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- My preference will be to have the locator dot on the inset map. It does help in places like Mylapore. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:32, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Photograph of slum housing at Bandra Station, Mumbai
Dear Planemad
I plan to use your photo of slum housing at Bandra Station, Mumbai in a forthcoming book. I would like to include your name in the photo credits. Also, do you have an even higher resolution file of the image that you could e-mail me as an attachment or post on the web?
Thanks

[edit] external link icon
Not sure if it's been resolved yet, but you said (at Saravask's talk page):
“ | Yep, same as clicking the coordinates at the title. Better than that would be to straight away take you to the google map, but that would show the external link icon ([1]) wouldnt it? | ” |
You can fix this by doing the following: <span class="plainlinks">[http://www.google.com google]</span>
which prints like so: google. Not sure what you two were talking about, but if you ever need any help with wikicoding or CSS or such I'm a pretty decent programmer. See you around.. -- drumguy8800 C T 08:49, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, just let me know what you want done and I'll see what I can come up with. -- drumguy8800 C T 10:17, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox coords consolidation
Done. Thanks for suggesting it. Saravask 03:03, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Planemad. Great work with the beautiful maps. I changed the code per your requests. Your cartography is beginning to put even these jpeg maps to shame. Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks. Saravask 19:38, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- OK, I'll let you know if I see any. Thanks again for the great work. Saravask 19:52, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] AAI
I noticed that in Airports Authority of India you had a new logo in which Baton Roughe, Louisiana was displayed. Please correct this egregious error. I do not understand how or why such an image was used, nonetheless, remove it, and place the real new logo, which is a red-orange version of the same old blue logo.
Thank you
