[edit] Plot
After receiving an invitation for Karate Island, SpongeBob arrives on Karate Island, along with Sandy. There he meets the Master Udon, who uses three fake Karate masters who fake getting beaten up by SpongeBob. Sandy starts to believe something fishy is going on, as SpongeBob is dubbed King of Karate and given the throne. After a small conversation with SpongeBob, Sandy leaves in anger. Seconds later, SpongeBob's throne traps him where he's sitting, and Udan brings out a pen.
Hearing SpongeBob's cries, Sandy shrugs and decides that SpongeBob should get himself out of his own mess; but then when SpongeBob cries again, calling for her, Sandy comes to his aid.
Now, SpongeBob is in Karate Tower, and Sandy runs inside (dressed in Bruce Lee's trademark yellow jumpsuit). She faces the three perils of the tower: The Tickler, the one that tickles (his weakness is jelly-filled doughnuts), Lip Service, the one that has huge lips (she breaks her lips after Sandy dries them with her hairdryer), and Filthy Phil, the one that unleashes odor (he falls due to his own odor; Sandy is not affected due to her fresh air dome/helmet). The tower is also a direct reference to Bruce Lee's Game of Death. After that, Sandy finds SpongeBob and Udon. He traps Sandy in a cage, and reveals he is a real estate agent, selling timeshares. Sandy performs a meditation ritual, and breaks free of the cage.
She rips off her jumpsuit, revealing her bikini underneath; Sandy and Udan suddenly turn extremely buff (then are back to normal again, immediately) and fight. Sandy wins after a lot of fighting, and knocks Udan out of the tower and he falls off the island into the water below. Sandy frees SpongeBob, and they go to the boat. SpongeBob is sorry that he is not the King of Karate, but Sandy consoles him by saying that he'll always be the King of Karate to her.
Squidward appears in his own boat. Apparently, he too got an invitation, except it says King of Clarinets, not King of Karate. He arrives at Clarinet Island, where he is now dubbed King of Clarinets. The episode ends showing a close-up of the apparently still-alive Master Udon standing on one of the poles shown when SpongeBob arrived at Karate Island.
The episode originally ended in a dedication to Noriyuki "Pat" Morita (1932-2005), also known as Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid series, who died on November 24, 2005. However, in recent showings, that ending has been cut.
[edit] References To Popular Culture
- The episode contains several allusions to the Kill Bill films, directed by Quentin Tarantino[citation needed].
- Sandy's jumpsuit is a mix between the one that Bruce Lee wore in Game of Death and Uma Thurman wore in Kill Bill.
- The entire idea of facing opponents on different levels of a tower are direct references to Bruce Lee in Game of Death, and later Uma Thurman in Kill Bill.
- The painting of a boat inside Gary's shell is a replica of the painting over The Simpson family's couch.
- When Sandy getting out of the cage, she uses series of hand signals, which refers to the popular anime/manga Naruto.
[edit] Quotes
- Udon: He is forbidden to leave until he signs this contract.
- Mailfish: Special delivery for SpongeBob SquarePants.
- SpongeBob: (Crying) Special delivery just for me...you think I'm..special?
- Mailfish: All right, do we have to go through this every time I deliver your mail? SHEESH!!
- Sandy: (To Lip Service) That's enough lip outta you!
- Squidward: (Rides on a boat after SpongeBob and Sandy left) Iam here! The king of clairnets has arrived!
[edit] Cultural References
- Udon is a type of noodle Japanese soup. Sandy makes this reference when she says "You're in hot soup now, Udan!"
- The first person that Sandy fought used his special technique metal hands that were for tickling. He was also dressed in a beret and black and white striped shirt; the stereotypical costume for a Frenchman. Thus (in an adult way) this character could be thought of as a French tickler.
- Whenever the Tickler spoke, his mouth animation did not match his dialogue. This is a reference to all dubbed live action Japanese films, where the voices often did not match up with the actors.
- The French Tickler is similar to the French Taunter from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
- Sandy's tail turning into an arm might be a reference to Trogdor from Home Star Runner.
[edit] Trivia/Goofs
- Ever since the "The Best Day Ever" marathon, the Pat Morita memorial picture has been removed for an unknown reason. In UK, it is still shown.
- When Sandy knocks Udon's teeth out, you can see a little bit of blood flying out of Udon's mouth (due to the fact that his teeth were knocked out). Nick doesn't usually allow blood on their shows which doesn't explain why Nick went ahead and showed it without editing it out. (But Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius "Nightmare in Retroville" has blood shown too.) Blood is also seen in Dying For Pie.
- In Germany, this episode is called Der König des Karate, which means "The King of Karate'.
- When SpongeBob cleans Gary's shell, he goes inside and it looks much bigger than both Gary and he, like the Tardis. Obviously Gary can change size like SpongeBob can.
- Udon locked Spongebob into a chair. However, when Sandy defeats Udon, Spongebob walks over to Sandy, with no explanation of how he escaped.
- When Sandy throws jelly filled donuts at The French Tickler, the first shot of the plate shows that there is barely any left, but the second shot shows the plate full of dough-nuts again.
