[edit] Title

WikiProject:Oklahoma State Highways

[edit] Scope

To provide a set of standardized, well-written, and well-sourced articles on all state highways in Oklahoma (except lettered spurs).

[edit] Participants

If you are interested in a newsletter, please add yourself to Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Newsletter/List. New members will no longer be added to this list.

[edit] Structure

All articles are to be named Oklahoma State Highway X. Please see WP:SRNC and Wikipedia:Naming conventions/Numbered highways for discussion on this topic.

[edit] Infobox

Place the infobox at the very top of the page. (See below for information on how it works).

[edit] Lead section

The lead section should begin by stating the highway's name (in bold, per the Manual of Style) and the commonly accepted abbreviations (OK-x and SH-x, and any other names that are used). State that the highway is maintained by the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Give the length, in miles and kilometers. If the highway is very long, give a very general description of the route (terminii, part of state it runs through).

[edit] Route summary

Include a description of the route here. Note routes the article highway intersects, towns it passes through, duplexes, etc. If possible, upload and insert pictures.

On very long highways, split this up with subheadings.

[edit] History

If possible, write a section on the highway's history. When was the highway commissioned? Include any extensions, truncations, and/or major reroutes.

[edit] Notes

Include anything interesting about the highway here, such as memorial (and other name) signage, historical notes, events that happened on the highway, etc. Several notes pertaining to the same subject should get a section (with a heading) instead.

[edit] Spurs

Create a bulleted list of lengths and brief route desciptions of lettered spurs here. Lettered spurs should redirect to the parent route. (Exceptions are State Highway 17A, 40A, and 251A, which are both orphaned. Spurs off of U.S. Highways should redirect to Oklahoma State Highway spurs from U.S. Highways unless you have a lot to say about them - e.g. State Highway 77H.)

[edit] Exit list

If the highway has any freeway sections, include an ELG-compliant exit list here.

[edit] References

Cite all sources used.

[edit] External links

Include external links related to the highway.

[edit] Succession box

For U.S. and Interstate highways, create a succession box at the extreme bottom of the article. Use the {{ok browse}} template; see Interstate 40 for an example.

These were once used on all articles. This information is now included in the infobox on intrastate articles so this should be deleted on intrastate articles with the infobox.

[edit] Working examples of good structure

[edit] Goals

  1. To have an article for all current routes.
  2. To have some Featured Articles. (Citations and lengths in miles and kilometers are very important!)

[edit] Tasks

  1. Create an article for all current state highways. (130 possible, ~78% done)
  2. Place routeboxes on articles which need them.
  3. Create new shield images as necessary. (Use Meat_cleavers.svg)

Our infobox, shown at right, is {{Infobox Oklahoma Highway}} and is fairly simple to use. These are the parameters:

  • article_route - The highway number you're writing about.
  • map - If a map at Image:Ok-x path.png exists, pass "yes", and it will be displayed. Otherwise, do not include.
  • yrcom - The highway's "birth" and "death" dates. If the highway still exists, place the creation year and a dash (e.g. "1942-"). If unknown, do not include.
  • length_mi - Length in miles. Kilometers are computed automatically.
  • direction_a - west or south.
  • direction_b - east or north.
  • from - The western or southern terminus. Include a shield graphic of the highway it ends at (if any).
  • to - The eastern or northern terminus.
  • previous - The highway which has the next lowest number.
  • previous_route - The type of the previous highway (I, US, or SH).
  • next - The highway which has the next highest number.
  • next_route - The type of the next highway (I, US, or SH).

If you are writing about a highway with two distinct sections, use {{Infobox Oklahoma Highway 2}}, which works in basically the same way.

Deleted (decommissioned) highways can be added as well, if enough information about them can be collected. Be especially sure to cite sources on these articles.

[edit] Images

There is a set of highway shield images in SVG format for use in articles. The other set is the new state-outline ("meat cleaver") shields introduced in 2006, which are stored under Oklahoma State Highway X. The routebox displays this shield.

ODOT's goal for replacing all of the old circular shields was January 1, 2007. Therefore, the circle signs should no longer be used on current highways; use the state outline shield instead. However, circle signs should be used for articles on highways that were decommissioned before the new shield was introduced in 2006. Use the shield= override parameter to display a circle shield in the infobox.)

Use 20px for two-digit signs, and 25px for three-digit signs. Shields in the infobox (and other standalone places) are 100px.

[edit] A note about abbreviations

There are two commonly accepted abbreviations for Oklahoma highways - SH- (as ODOT generally uses) and OK- (as is often used by roadgeeks). Either abbreviation will do, but both should be mentioned in the lead section (see Structure above) and one should be used exclusively throughout the rest of the article.
