ケネス・ジョセフ・アロー（Kenneth Joseph Arrow, 1921年8月23日 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国の経済学者。20世紀経済学史上の最重要人物の一人とされ経済学全般において革命的な論文を書いている。経済学・社会学・政治学など他学問にも影響を与えている。1972年51歳という史上最年少でノーベル経済学賞を受賞。

1940年ニューヨーク市立大学シティカレッジ卒業。1941年コロンビア大学にて修士号取得。1946年から1949年の間コロンビア大学とシカゴ大学で研究を続ける。1951年コロンビア大学から博士号取得。1972年に、ジョン・ヒックスとともにノーベル経済学賞を受賞。1957年にジョン・ベイツ・クラーク賞、1973年に米経済学会会長、2004年にアメリカ国家科学賞を授与される。

アローの業績は、経済学の理論的基礎から応用分野まで幅広い分野にまたがっている。どれも目覚ましく重要な研究ばかりである。「アローの不可能性定理(一般可能性定理)」として知られる社会選択理論への貢献。一般均衡理論・価格理論に関する研究。その他にも、内生的成長理論や情報の経済学などの研究がある。

[編集] 社会選択理論

アローの社会選択理論への貢献は、彼の博士論文でもある『社会選択と個人の価値』によって、経済学の一分野としての社会選択論を事実上創設したことにあり、この論文の帰結は、アローの不可能性定理（一般可能性定理）として知られる。

社会選択（Social Choice）とは、「社会の状態」を選択肢として、その社会の構成員個々の選好関係 (Preference Relation) から、その社会において合理的と考えられる選好関係、すなわち社会的選好(Social Preference)を決定することである。アローは、合理的であるための制約条件として、(1)構成員の選好関係の非限定性、(2)社会の選好関係の完全性と推移性、(3)全員一致性、(4)二選択肢評価の無関係な対象からの独立性、の4つを挙げ、これらの制約条件を満たす社会的選好が見つかったら、それはある一人の構成員の選好と一致してしまうこと、つまりその社会は独裁制とならざるをえないことを数学的論理で証明した（アロー自身の本では「一般可能性定理」という名前だが，「アローの不可能性定理」という名前の方が有名になってしまった）。

(1983年にこの業績によりノーベル経済学賞を受賞した)ジェラール・ドブリューと共に、アローは限定的な仮定を置いた上で、市場の明確な均衡の存在を初めて厳密に証明した。一般均衡の項を参照。アローは続けて不確実性に関する問題や、均衡の安定性、競争的均衡が有効か否かの問題を扱うため、このモデルを拡張していった。

[編集] 内生的成長理論

アローは経済成長の主要因である技術の変化の源泉を説明しようとした、内生的成長理論(「新たな成長理論」としても知られる)の研究を始動するのを手助けした。この理論が有名になるまで、技術の変化は外生的に発生するものと仮定されてきた。つまり、なぜ技術の変化が発生するのかを、何の説明も無く仮定に置いてきた。内生的成長理論はなぜ企業が革新を行うのか、標準的なな経済学上の理由を提供した。すなわち、イノベーションと技術の変化は内生的に定められるとし、このモデルの名前の由来にもなった。この理論の広大な文献はアローの開拓的な業績に続いて成長した。

[編集] 情報の経済学

さらに開拓的な研究として、アローは市場における情報の非対称性によってもたらされる問題について調査した。多くの取引において、ある側(通常は売り手)は売られている製品に関して他方の側よりもより多くの情報を持っている。情報の非対称性は情報の多い側が情報の少ない側に対して不正を働く誘引を作り、その結果、情報の非対称下でも市場が働くための保証書や第三者機関のような様々な市場の構造が開発された。アローはこの問題を医療に関して分析した(1963年にAmerican Economic Reviewで発表された「医療の不確実性と厚生経済学」と題された論文)。その後研究者たちは様々な市場、特に中古の資産、オンラインオークション、保険の分野においても調査を行った。
