If you've been frequenting the RecentChanges page, you might already expect that I am a Wikipediholic -- yep, I admit it (score = 82).
Problem now is, sleeping has switched from a full (i.e. normal) to part time occupation.... oh well - you only live once, there's plenty of time to rest later...

[edit] Yosemite Valley

Hi, do you happen to have the original copy of Image:Yosemite Valley from Tunnel View in Yosemite NP.JPG? I feel it might do well at FPC, but its too small and has grain and JPEG artifacts right now. Thanks - Jack (talk) 15:02, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Sadly, that is the highest resolution I have. --mav

[edit] Some info

Mav, I have a new email, you can write to me from my user page which I suggest you read and follow the link at the top of my talk page; any private comments you would like to share with me would be appreciated. Thank you. Alex756 07:27, 2 February 2007 (UTC) Thanks for your comments; btw some people seem to think there never were "members" of Wikipedia. Do you know where that idea came from? It does not make much sense to me, but it seems that it is being repeated now that there really are no members. Alex756 19:13, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Daniel, you requested the deletion of this picture from Commons. May I know why? This is just a routine check. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 18:39, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your prompt answer. I unlinked and deleted the picture. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 23:43, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] favor

Could you consider making a comment at the talk:Race and intelligence page? If you go now, you will see at the top my proposing to mediate a conflict, followed by some discussion by participants in the conflict, followed by a Request for Comment, followed by more discussion by participants in the conflict. It should take you 20 minutes or so to read over it, and I think it would mean a lot if you then left whatever comment you have under the RfC space. The portions I wrote (A second attempt to move ahead, and RfC) are needless to say my own take on the conflict. But if you want the basic empirical data on the conflict these two sections say it all: [1] and [2] Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 12:10, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Looney Tunes intro.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Looney Tunes intro.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Article in need of cleanup - please assist if you can

Hi maveric149,

I'm pretty new at editing and not only using wikipedia.

I searched for gams. What I really wanted was GAMS, but I didn't know that wikipedia is case sensitive. So I added a "See Also" at gams which links to the possibilities of GAMS. Why did you remove it?

Actually, when you type GAMS, you first get at site the gives you three possibilties: GAMS (Software), GAMS (Guide) and Gams (city). but if you type gams, you directly get to the city without a choice.

Instead of me adding "See also" to gams, could you add the "choice site" in between? I don't know how to do that

Thanks Jan

That wasn't me. That was User:Docu. --mav

[edit] Grinding stone image

Hello - I was going to do some editing over on the metate and grinding slab pages, and saw that you had upload an image of a grinding stone (on right) - One quick question - can you tell me where the shot was taken (if you are, in fact, the person who uploaded the image)? I wanted to add some contextual info to the caption and article text, but I have no idea where the stone was located. Thanks in advance! -- Oaxaca dan 18:22, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Much obliged, mav. That should be good enough for now. -- Oaxaca dan 18:43, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Gadams.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Gadams.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jkelly 22:25, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] World Heritage template

Hi! I created a template for World Heritage Sites: {{Infobox World Heritage Site}}. Since many of the protected areas are also recognized as World Heritage Sites, I thought that it will be appropriate to forward this template here, and hopefully, for the community to help improve the template. Someone mentioned that the footnotes are unclear (i.e. why the need to emphasize "official" there). It's because the official name (or the name as inscribed on the List) is different from what we usually know. And the Region also has footnote to tackle specifically the classification of those regions which may fall ambiguously between two continents (e.g. those in Russia, Turkey, Cyprus, etc.). In addition, I think that the info provided in the template is much like a jargon for most readers since it box is more of use for internal references in the World Heritage program. I hope that the community will help improve the template and make it more relevant to the readers of wikipedia in general. Thanks. Joey80 13:44, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

I did a lot of updating on the article lately, mainly so the article would continue to be a featured one since there have been some criteria alterations since it was originally promoted to FA level in 2004, due in no small part to your excellent work.--MONGO 04:40, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Delighted to hear from you

It must be because I was thinking about you. As it happens, I was in Valdosta relatively recently after many years away.

First off, let me recommend that you head south of town to Farmer Brown's Market and buy yourself some genuine south Georgia cane syrup. Then, help yourself to a bunch of boiled peanuts. Oh man, I wish.

I see from your pics that you found the courthouse and my favorite store, Southern Salvage, which closed forever the day I got back to town (which I missed).

My number one suggestion of a photo spot is the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area, a southern swamp with boardwalk so you can get out into it. Here are some links:

Near Grand Bay, there is a wonderful little nature museum, operated mainly for scheduled classes by school children, but well worth the visit if you can find it open. Can't temember the name, but I'll see if I can come up with it. (BTW, I see the Grand Bay article is just a stub. I guess I should add something.)

Finally,

  • My brother's Valdosta pics including the courthouse and Southern Salvage, as well as some other stuff, including the "antebellum" (actually postbellum) Southern Mansion called "The Crescent".

Two bonuses:

  • If you are interested, I could arrange an introduction in Valdosta to my cousin's husband, an avid birdwatcher, and, get this, retired state highway engineer, next time you are there.
  • If you can make the time to get down to Tallahassee, you absolutely should not miss another plunge into the North American tropics, Wakulla Springs.

[edit] Advice

question -- I guess any new articles that refer to people or companies raise a red flag with the editors.

I tried adding an article about a company which created the first software based PBX, but immediately got a spam warning put on it. I have spent a couple of hours improving the article and adding references (to demonstrate notability), however was hoping you could give advice as well.

In case the consensus is that the company is truly not notable, I have no offense taken - I am not related to this company in any way. However, I am a professional in the field which uses their product, and I can see the value of including information about the product (PBX) and the technology and the field of expertise, as there are many certified engineers out there in the market place that I am sure use Wikipedia.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
