- Wikipedia:WikiProject San Francisco Bay Area
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Santa Barbara County
- Wikipedia:WikiProject California State Highways
- Wikipedia:WikiProject California County Routes
The following are the California counties that can be considered as parts of Southern California, the categories related specifically to them, and recent changes to those articles (by clicking "RC".)
Regions:
*Southern California | category | article RC | category RC |
*Greater Los Angeles Area | category | article RC | category RC |
*Inland Empire | article RC |
Counties:
- South of the San Gabriel/San Bernardino mountains
- North of the San Gabriel/San Bernardino mountains
Note: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties are also considered part of the Central Coast region of California, which also included Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. Kern County includes the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, which makes it also part of California's Central Valley.

[edit] Goals and projects
[edit] Goals
- Please see the talk page for more discussion of the goals for the SoCal WikiProject.
- Make sure that every Southern California county and city article meets Wikipedia guidelines
- Add at least one quality picture for:
- every Southern California city and community
- every State Park in SoCal
- every County Park in SoCal
- every major landmark in SoCal
- Improve and enlarge every stub article on SoCal topics
- Create new articles on SoCal topics to eliminate any red links in SoCal articles
- Improve major articles related to Southern California so that they can be first taken to Peer review, then nominated as a Featured article candidate, and finally featured as a Featured article.
[edit] Projects
[edit] Photography projects
- The old photo project:
- Identify every city and landmark in Southern California that is older than 1923.
- Search both the Library of Congress ([1]) and the Los Angeles Public Library ([2]) websites for public domain photos for use in Wikipedia articles. (Also see the Resources below for more sources of information and photos.)
- Then and now photo project: For many of the old (pre-1923) photos, it would be nice to also have a more recent picture showing the changes over the years.
- Photography "expeditions": There are several areas and corridors in Southern California that are rich with targets for potential photos for Wikipedia articles. Especially with some careful planning, a half-day or one-day photo expedition for each area could help provide numerous photos for the wikipedia. For example, a casual trip down Sunset Blvd. will provide numerous photo opportunities, but by careful planning you can also catch many sights that are just off of, or not easily seen from Sunset Blvd (such as the old Charlie Chaplin Studio/A&M Recording Studios lot at Sunset and La Brea that is now home to Jim Henson Productions). Some potential photo expeditions would include:
- Sunset Blvd. (probably a minimum of two days to catch everything)
- Hollywood Blvd.
- Wilshire Blvd.
- Griffith Park
- Downtown Los Angeles/Chinatown/Little Tokyo
- Long Beach/Port of Long Beach/Port of Los Angeles/San Pedro/Palos Verdes Peninsula
- Pasadena/San Marino art museums and educational institutions
- Buena Park/Anaheim tourist attractions
- Huntington Beach/Newport Beach coastline
[edit] Cleanup projects
- Category cleanup? Urgent? See the remarks at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Southern California#Categories for what probably needs to be done
- Create Merged-Consolidation articles for landmarks: Many of the SoCal city and community articles, as well as articles such as Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard, have long lists of landmarks that are either red links or links to stubs that will probably not grow much larger. It would be much better to create some consolidation articles such as Landmarks of Sunset Boulevard that would have brief descriptions of all of the landmarks with links to the much smaller number of landmarks that deserve full-fledged articles.
[edit] Featured article projects
- See: Peer review - Featured article candidates - featured articles
- Find at least one city or community article that is ready, or close to being ready for Peer review with the goal of turning it into a featured article.
- Suggestions:

[edit] Adopt an article
Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
[edit] New Wikipedia articles on SoCal topics
Please feel free to list your new Southern California-related articles here (newer articles at the top, please). Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Main Wikipedia page. DYK has a 72 hr. time limit from the creation of the article.
