カーペンターズ (Carpenters 定冠詞「The」をつける表記は正式なものではない) は、リチャード・カーペンター(1946年10月15日 - )とカレン・カーペンター(1950年3月2日 - 1983年2月4日)の兄妹からなるミュージック・グループ。
カレンはボーカルと、一部ドラムなどを担当し、声の美しさ、なかでも低音域での美しさに定評がある。 リチャードはボーカル、作曲、アレンジなどを担当する。メロディの美しさが評価される。

1969年11月15日にアルバムOFFERING(のちにTicket to ride(涙の乗車券)にタイトル変更)でA&Mレコードよりデビュー。その後、世界的なヒットに恵まれるが、コンサートツアーの過酷さや過度のプレッシャー等から、兄リチャードがクオルード依存症となり1979年から約2年間、活動を停止する。妹のカレンがBillboard誌に"Richard's chubby sister(リチャードのぽっちゃりした妹)"と書かれたことにショックを受けたのがきっかけで摂食障害を患ったと言われている。1975年、ラスベガスのコンサートで"Top of the World"を歌っている最中に倒れたことから、後に予定されていたUKとJapanツアーがキャンセルされてしまった。1979年にリチャードはカンザス州のリハビリ施設で依存症からの回復を試みる。その間、カレンはカーペンターズ時代のイメージとは違う大人向けのディスコ調の曲でソロ活動を始めるが、リチャードやレコード会社からの反応が悪く、1996年までお蔵入りとなる。兄の回復と共にカーペンターズとして活動を再開する。1982年、カレンは拒食症を改善するためにNYの有名なセラピストスティーブン・レベンクロンからセラピーを受け始め、カリフォルニア州に戻り離婚の最終段階の準備を始める。カレンは1週間で5kgも体重が戻ることになるが、そのために心臓に負荷がかかりすぎてしまった。1983年2月4日、両親の家で急性心不全により32歳の若さで急逝。リチャードは翌年に結婚し、カレンの死後も音楽活動を続けることになる。

現在に至るまでその人気は確かなもので、日本でもCM・ドラマの主題歌などさまざまなメディアで耳にする機会は少なくない。
1995年にテレビドラマ『未成年』の主題歌・挿入歌に起用されたこと等をきっかけに一大リバイバルブームとなり、同年発売された日本独自編集のベストアルバム『青春の輝き～ザ・ベスト・オブ・カーペンターズ』は300万枚以上の売り上げを記録した。

カーペンターズとしての来日歴は、1972年、1974年、1976年の3回である。1974年の来日公演では、武道館ではひばり児童合唱団と、京都では地元の合唱団(Richardが「Kyoto Children's choir」と紹介していた)と「Sing」を日本語で歌った。

2位まで上り詰めたものの1位を取れなかった曲が5曲もあるのは、クリーデンス・クリアウォーター・リバイバルと並ぶ珍記録である。ちなみに「イエスタデイ・ワンス・モア」を止めたのは「苦労人」と呼ばれたジム・クロウチの「ルロイ・ブラウンは悪い奴」(1973年7月21日から2週連続No.1、同年年間第3位)である。
その他に、アメリカではシングル発売されなかったがイギリスや日本では大ヒットとなったハンク・ウィリアムスの代表曲「ジャンバラヤ」(Jambalaya)のカバーなどもある。
