[edit] Welcome!

Hello, The wub/allarchive, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like working here and want to continue. If you need help on how to name new articles, look at Naming Conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the Manual of Style. If you need general help, look at Help and the FAQ, and if you can't find your answer there, check the Village pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions). There's still more help at the Tutorial and the Policy Library. Also, don't forget to visit the Community Portal — and if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my New-Users' Talk Page.
Additional tips:
Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:
  • If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
  • Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
  • You might want to add yourself to the New User Log
  • If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language
Happy editing!

[edit] User:Humanbot update 03 June 2005

On this day version two is released of the client-side User:Humanbot script. It allows you to browse the English Wikipedia on other tabs and edit it normally. en:User:Humanbot#Mailing list. r3m0t talk 09:44, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for voting on my RFA. Have some pie! I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer number of supporters (including several people that usually disagree with my opinion). I shall do my best with the proverbial mop. Yours, Radiant_>|< 08:14, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] User:Humanbot update 08 June 2005

Version two-two released today includes in that green box a nice count of how many articles are left. This more or less co-incides with the event of hitting only 1000 articles remaining. Also, I have re-arranged the User:Humanbot page to make it easier to get to the right stuff. Progress charts, wikicookies, wikilove and a more thorough spelling check is promised when this is completed. (and also when the exam pressure eases off a little on me) r3m0t talk 17:43, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC) Note: If you think this message was too trivial for a mailing, tell me and I'll stick to more important announcements on the list.

Yeah, I totally forgot, they were screenshots I took with the PC game. The copyright goes to SEGA, right?

[edit] Template:Locke Arrakon

Hi there :)

Thanks for adding Template:Locke Arrakon to TFD. Just in case you're wondering where your nomination went, I decided to use a bit of common sense and just speedily delete it to save everybody from wasting their time. Don't worry- you did the right thing by nominating it, but it's just such an obvious one there's no point in even voting, since the template namespace is supposed to be for templates. If you want to go through that process, you can be my guest and relist it (or let me know)— I just don't see the point.

Yours, Frazzydee| 22:36, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] User:Humanbot update 13 June 2005

The spelling2 project (to work on secondary namespaces) was opened and finished. Progress charts will be available soon.

Version six-three tracks who made the edits and rankings are available. Much of the work was done while I was asleep, explaining my low place ;).

The next project, which may even be released today, will probably fix incorrectly capitalised headings, particularly "See Also" and "External Links".

The mailing list has grown to 24 people and while that is very nice for my ego, it is rather difficult to send out updates. This is why I did not send out a notice that the spelling2 project had opened. From now on, then, you must watch User:Humanbot/announce for updates. r3m0t talk 12:00, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rollback and godmode-light

Hiya, The wub, I noticed you use the godmode-light script. As you use an emulation of the rollback feature I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on a proposal I have which would grant the rollback feature to those who request it, similar to Wikipedia:Requests for adminship, except with a lower threshold. The proposal is at Wikipedia:Requests for rollback; your comments are welcomed at Wikipedia talk:Requests for rollback. Thanks! Talrias (t | e | c) 17:08, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

Are you haveing any problems with it, because I can't seem to get it work, it just stops after Getting article history, in Firefox it gets to the second step (Getting article edit form...) before it freezes. --Eliezer | £€åV€ m€ å m€§§åg€ 08:46, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] thanks for supporting me

Hello, just a quick note to express my gratitude for your support of my RfA. I'm sure I'll become a familiar face on places like the Administrator's Noticeboard and Requests for Adminship, as well as the murkier parts of my new job. "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48, NIV) Never was a truer word spoken. I feel empowered, yes, but not in the "oooh cool delete button!" way I was kind of expecting. Already I feel the weight of the responsibility I have now been entrusted with, a weight that will no doubt reduce given time. Thank you for believing in me. :) GarrettTalk 10:28, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I'd really apreciate your offer for help. The wikicity is pretty new and I've been away on wacation so I haven't been able to add much. But hopefully it will become as comprehensive as for example memory-alpha in a while. Also suggestions for logo and css theme would be nice. --Dalen 17:14, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for updating the featured article and featured picture last week. Just for your information, there is a list of candidate articles and pictures, culled from WP:FA and WP:FP on the relevant talk pages which I try to keep updated, so we know which ones we have used. -- ALoan (Talk) 10:24, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Not a problem - I'm glad someone was looking at it while I was away recently. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:02, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
I saw that you updated again (thanks! although I tend to leave longer than a week between updates: there are not all that many UK featured articles or pictures). I had a thought last week: maybe we should institute an "automatic" update system like is used on the main page or, for example, the Astronomy wikiportal - you need dated subpages where the articles are lined up, and the template links to the right one using a systems variable (currentmonth for example). A bit of work to set up, but then several features could be lined up well in advance, and no maintenance for a while. What do you think?-- ALoan (Talk) 22:09, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Hi! I'll have to congratulate you on your excellent choice of username! Been reading Philip K Dick? :) - ulayiti (talk) 13:31, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

It's only a short story, about ten pages long, so it won't take more than a few minutes to read... and it's certainly worth it, it's one of his best works. (Can you tell I'm a big fan of Dick's?) :) - ulayiti (talk) 14:47, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, the book called Beyond Lies the Wub is a collection of short stories (which includes that one). If you're interested in his work, the short stories are a good place to start. I'd like to ask you to re-consider your vote at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/A. F. Gotch. I've cleaned up the page, and added another of his books. --GordonWattsDotCom 01:28, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

  • FYI, Ral315 reverted my edit here and gave this commentary: "revert; Signpost is not a soapbox to gauge public opinion." *I replied to him along these lines:
    • I saw your revert on the paper:

(diff) (hist) . . Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2005-09-12/Features and admins; 01:28 . . Ral315 (Talk) (revert; Signpost is not a soapbox to gauge public opinion.)

I did not post to estimate or measure or gauge public opinion:

Conversely, an editor myself, I posted to update the news. (Further, I could care less to estimate the public opinion; rather, it is important to educate readers so they can be an educated voting public.)

I respect your opinion, but you're only a 15-year old high-school sophomore, and I'm a 39-year old veteran, even to the point of being an old geezer. Why don't you run it by the editors before you revert -unless you can justify keeping the public in the dark; besides, I did not advocate or promote anything: I just reported on the news, about which I am expert.

--GordonWattsDotCom 01:35, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

In all fairness, I want to let you know I'm going to notify the editors about you, so you won't feel I'm talking behind your back. It's their paper, after all, and they can determine these matters.--GordonWattsDotCom 01:40, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

--GordonWattsDotCom 01:43, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, but I'm afraid I've got to go with Ral315 on this. Signpost articles don't tend to get edited/updated after they've been put up, except for glaring errors and typos. It's just the way it works. Nor is it really fair for you to add your appeals to them. RfC is the way to get attention for the voting. Good luck on getting the article featured. the wub "?/!" 09:26, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
I think Gordon thought I was just a random editor with a grudge against him. In any event, it's over now, and I do wish Gordon good luck as well. Ral315 12:58, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
No, I never thought you had a grudge against me, but YES, I definitely thought you were just some random, you know -pop-in and whack’em editor, just carelessly whacking something that looks odd -Well, I have confidence in your abilities, and while I'd do things differently, I can sleep well at night knowing you're not some weirdo or something. Besides, after so many hours of editing (and personally visiting the Schiavo website to get non-Fair Use photos), I just might get some sleep, lol. PS: How'd you get a user name so similar to Raul654 AKA Mark, the Featured Articles editor? Just coincidence and random chance? Thx. Take care.--GordonWattsDotCom 13:06, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] GordonWatts' RFA

I agree with you, but because I've taken a lot of flak for it, I'm just going to insert this two-sentence blurb: "In a controversial RFA, GordonWatts (formerly GordonWattsDotCom) failed to gain consensus for adminship. The page was protected by an administrator with 4 support votes, 29 object votes, and 5 neutral votes." I'd much rather leave it out, but I figure this way, we can keep it NPOV, and let readers draw their own conclusion. I'm also going to leave a note on the talk page explaining why it's in there, why it's so short, and why I don't want it edited at all. Ral315 23:04, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

By the way (in case you hadn't noticed), I changed my mind, after GordonWatts added another "press release" to the newsroom. Ral315 15:08, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The charter is here. (Relating to Esperanza)

Hello The wub, the Charter for Esperanza is up. Take a looksie :) Redwolf24 (talk) 02:59, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza made less bureaucratic

Hello again, I have (unilatterly) taken away the 'assembly' idea, as per my reasons at that edit summary and per Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Charter. I have left the admin general, as some leadership is good. Now, all you have to do is be a member to establish consensus, the whole assembly idea is gone. Also, I have added an advisory committee, of four members, with limited power besides watching over the admin general and making sure he doesn't do anything stupid. Please look at the ammended charter, and I would love a comment. Redwolf24 (talk) 00:31, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Hello, The wub/allarchive! This message is to inform you that round three of Wikipedia Mind Benders will open on Wednesday, September 21, at approximately 22:00 UTC. While the opening time may vary by two or three hours, the round will open no earlier than 22:00 UTC. In addition, there are several rule changes, which will be detailed when the round opens. Everyone who answers a question correctly will receive points, but speed does give some extra points! Round three offers 11 new exciting and mind-bogglind questions, written by Deryck C.. These promise to be lots of fun! We sincerely hope you join us.

Also, congratulations to ROYGBIV for winning round two; it was an extremely close game, with the runner-up, Spondoolicks, only two points behind. Let's keep round three competitive! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 22:31, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Kevin Garnett photo

Hi, would you mind uploading that photo of Kevin Garnett to a more expressive file name (other than Untitled.jpg)? We don't want people using generic filenames like that on Wikipedia; they keep getting overwritten. (See Wikipedia:Centralized discussion/Generic image file names for more.) KevinGarnett.jpg, for instance, would be safe. Also, you need to provide copyright into for it, too. The old image is available here if you need it. Also, I commented out the link to it in Minnesota Timberwolves, so once you've re-uploaded, you'll need to edit that article to put it back. Thanks! Noel (talk) 02:23, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

You have expressed an interest in Wikimedia UK. Memo and Arts of Association are a company's constitution, and need to be agreed before the company is formed (though they can be changed at a later date). Please feel free to comment on the relevant talk pages (I'd rather the proposed drafts are left unedited so that it is easy to see what is going on) - particularly if there is something there that you would disagree with at the meeting, details of which can be found on the Wikimedia UK page on Wikimedia Meta-Wiki. Hi wub,

I just wanted to thank you for supporting me in my RfA. To tell you the truth, I was surprised by all the support I've gotten. I never saw myself as more than an occasional Wiki-hobbyist.

My wife sends her curses, as Wikipedia will likely suck up more of my time. She jokingly (I think) said she was tempted to log on to Wikipedia just to vote Oppose and let everyone know that she didn't want her husband to be an admin.

It means a great deal to me to get a cliché vote from you. I'll make sure your trust in me is founded. --Deathphoenix 14:51, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Okay, so I'm breaking my promise by adding to your talk page. :)

Seriously, I thanked Friday, and I'll thank you, too, for the thoughts. As I told Friday, though, the whole idea of an admin taking a comment made in IRC as official word to pull various rugs out from under various people is intolerable to me, especially when the reasoning seems threatening to those of differing opinions. I have the distinct impression now that, because I choose to share a religious affiliation or other "non-encyclopedic" trend, I'm not welcome.

I'll probably continue to monitor my talk page, but just in case, you can always email me. --Joe Sewell 22:03, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 1000

Thanks Wub. I'm lucky i've gotten into the real world again, because this place has become incredibly depressing. I see the names of valuable people I couldn't save from the mob and I weep at times. Purplefeltangel. Durin. Essjay(for the most part). Redwolf24 along with many, many Esperanzans, and now Slim Virgin is on the verge.

Kelly Martin and her gang are having their way at their whim, despite any apparent resistence. Welcoming is seeming more and more useless other than for the purpose of the sheer astonishment of statistics. karmafist 05:19, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for the negativity up there, it's my new year's resolution to reduce or eliminate that outlook regardless of outside stimuli, but it looks like i'm not there yet. I will endeavor to reach my goal, and I look forward to you being wowed by my 2000th Welcome. karmafist 02:32, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Explanation and Further Apology

I'm glad to hear about Red, and to me, Durin was RFA, so when he left actively vetting the candidates, he seemed to be only a shadow of what he was to me. As for Essjay, I guess he just learned earlier than me that Wikipedia's underpinnings are like an ocean and you just gotta flow with it. It's even becoming past Jimbo's control, as seen by the Seigenthaler incident.

Ultimately, 2005 was an insanely bad year for me. I'm a journalist by trade, but I put my career on hold in an attempt to steer it in a new direction after graduating from college in December '04 and wanting to avoid the fate of a few friends of mine who had a bad time in the profession and to hopefully become a politician here in New Hampshire.Unfortunately, this decision just caused alot of misery on my part -- several part time jobs, a few freelance paper jobs, a Real estate license that hasn't gone far yet, and continuing to live with my parents(oy...).

I think the past few months have rubbed off on me here, but luckily, 2006 has been alot better so far. I've gotten two decent part time jobs in the past two weeks, started at a new Real estate agency(my last boss was a crook), started up again on my novel, and things here begin to seem calming down at least. I guess the trick is understanding like Essjay has, that it's just like an ocean and if you go too hard into it, it'll swallow you up. I have no doubt we'll have another Kelly Martin RFC, only with someone other than Kelly and in regards to another subject, but with similiar rancor. Hopefully each one though will become smaller and smaller in intensity until eventually we don't even notice them and we can fix the things we want without trying to kill each other.

As for the userboxes, I have no qualms with your idea as long as fair use on user pages isn't attacked. I have no problem with using images that don't require fair use to be invoked if there are images available that are indicative of the subject and don't look like shit, such as the compromise with Template:User Rebel Alliance. However, if there aren't alternatives, not using fair use seems to be little more than paranoia, i'm going to try and get the opinion of a friend of mines' lawyer colleague in the next few days to get a real opinion rather than all the innuendo and babble regarding the subject on Wikipedia lately. karmafist 13:57, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Apology for possibly bumming you out! I know how that is, I tried going on a wiki break last month and I ended up having 100 edits per day ;-) karmafist 14:25, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RfA

Thank you for your support! I have decided to withdraw my nomination, due to growing oppose votes due to my lack of experence (and because I have userboxes on my page?). I will now aim to continue, and broadern my scope from userboxes. I will accept a nomination, should one be made, in 1-2 months. Ian13ID:540053 18:17, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I made the effort to remove the 2 userboxes which added me to supports userboxes stuff which people disliked, and also by hiding them I feel is a suitable compromise. I feel opposing based on things like that should be stopped, but it would still continue, probably just with a different excuse. And I will stand again should someone nominate me (very) late feb onwards. But once again, thank you for the trust you placed in me. Ian13ID:540053 19:33, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). [edit] Fair use image

Hope to see you back soon, The wub! Anyways, I noticed that you had Image:Jyllands-Posten Muhammad drawings.jpg shown on your user page. The image is uploaded under a fair use provision, and Wikipedia policy states that fair use images should not be displayed on any pages outside the main (article) namespace, including user pages. Would you mind removing the image or simply linking to it? (Add a ":" in from of the image, like this: [[:Image:Jyllands-Posten Muhammad drawings.jpg]]) Thanks a lot! (That's the standard message I've been using, but if you're on a break and don't reply after a few days, I'll go ahead and take the liberty of removing it myself. Hope you don't mind.) Thanks, and come back soon! Flcelloguy (A note?) 21:19, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't normally have have fair use images on my page, but I feel very strongly about this, and want to speak out. [edit] Not a Democracy

I don't support Wikipedia becoming a Democracy either, but rather a sociocracy, which we already have the rudiments of. I'm just trying to push it along with that petition of mine, so we can make sure that "catching Jimbo at a bad time" never hurts anyone like that ever again. Karmafist 15:09, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

[edit] Hello!

Does blocking count as editing? :-) Anyway...I just unblocked the imposter account Kurps and reblocked everything...I must have done it right after you did it, because when I read the block log, I only saw you unblocking - I misinterpreted this as something else entirely. Anyway, thanks for catching that. --HappyCamper 00:50, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Community Justice

Dear members of Community Justice,

This message is just a simple newsletter, telling you of some recent progress.

Community Justice didn't get as many members as we initially hoped, however we currently have 11, including a few sysops.

The temporary council is now fully set-up, and it will remain in it's current form unless someone contacts me (or uses the talk page) to say that they wish to join the council, or to hold a higher post. In this case, an election will be organised.

We have created two warning tags: {{civil1}} and {{civil2}}. These aren't been widely used, so I ask you to use them when you see fit.

Finally, thanks! Computerjoe 19:24, 25 February 2006 (UTC) (delivered in AWB).

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.

[edit] GA spam on featured template

hi, i see that the "good article" spam has been put back in Template:featured despite objections from several users. this seems to be the way the GA project works: boldly putting something into a page that doesnt want it, then claiming consensus is required to *remove* it again (consensus is never required to put it there in the first place).

this is exactly the same behaviour as witnessed on the attempt to create an article space "good article" star, which i & raul654 finally managed to have deleted (a huge effort since they had already spammed a 1000 articles with it), and on the Community Portal where this non-policy wikiproject has pride of place - its apparently far more important than any of the other dozens of collaborations!

they even had the cheek to remove the "non-policy process" template from the top of their project pages claiming they now had "enough support to be policy" - this is despite clear consensus on the talk page that its NOT policy. an attempt to put it back was quickly removed.

i would appreciate any comments on the template's talk page. i'm really fed up with fighting these GA spam battles everywhere, its quite tiring. why do they have to constantly spread their GA spam everywhere? hope you can help! Zzzzz 09:45, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. [edit] Depression Category

Hello,

I see that the decision was to keep the Category:People diagnosed with clinical depression. My original proposal was not whether or not to keep it but to change the name. If the name remains the same, the problems I outlined still exist.

Regards,

Michael David 22:39, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

It's an interesting problem. I am inclined to agree with JeffW though, categories ought to have well defined inclusion criteria. The current category should be reserved for those who have been diagnosed, and supporting evidence should be presented. This would certainly conform to policies on verifiability and no original research. I'm not sure whether a broader category of people are widely thought to have suffered from depression would be a good idea or not. Perhaps it would be a good idea to seek input from members of WikiProject Psychology and WikiProject Psychopathology. the wub "?!" 07:36, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Hello,
I took your advice and looked at the participants of the Psychology & Psychotherapy Projects. None seemed focused enough.
My concerns with the Category are, basically, two-fold: 1) The disservice it does to the person being listed in a readily-available, online source that states they were “diagnosed” with a psychopathologic condition if they were, in fact, not so diagnosed. How would you feel if you were so listed? 2) I spoke with a lawyer regarding this and was told a person so listed could have grounds for a lawsuit.
If this is not resolved within Wikipedia I will do the following:
We have an E-mail network where I can send messages to thousands of practitioners, rehabilitation centers, and other professionals at one time. We use this to disseminate new information that’s come along in the work. I intend to use this network to alert the profession of the Wikipedia Category.
Regards,
Michael David 12:40, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Well it seems to me we are in agreement here. If it can't be verified that they have been diagnosed, and isn't referenced in the article, then they should not be in the current category. Feel free to go ahead and remove the category from any articles where references are not provided. the wub "?!" 15:29, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your support on this issue. I enjoy contributing to and learning from Wikipedia. I have a wide variety of interests. But 40 years of work in Clinical Psychology has made me particularly protective of it - in particular, the patient’s right to privacy. Unfortunately we still live in a society and culture where a person with any hint of psychopathology is considered weak, and sometimes dealt with cruelly – even with fear. I do intend to visit the Category from time to time and check the bios of persons who have been included. I’m probably in for an argument to two. Thank you again.
Be healthy,
Michael David 18:13, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help! with Tennessee Williams Article

Hello again,

I’m not sure who to go to with this, but perhaps you can offer some assistance. Believe it or not it involves the Depression Category! Specifically: The Article on Tennessee Williams was without citation as to his ‘depression’. I placed the ‘citation needed’ flag into the Article and removed the Category from the Article. Another editor then added a citation with a link. However, access to the information in this link requires a paid subscription. I noted this and reversed the edit stating that all sources must be freely available to all Wikipedia users. I now seem to be caught in an edit battle. If you have the time, would you please go to the history page of the Tennessee Williams article and then offer me some advice?

Thank you,

Thanks for the useful feedback. I thought it might be something like that. I've been trying to follow the "back end" pages of Wikipedia, but there's an awful lot of them. I thought there was a 7 day delete delay on Stub pages with a Context link? Never mind, I'll take your advice and include an {{Underconstruction}} template; and also make sure my stubs in future are a bit fuller.

Cheers! OrangUtanUK 16:24, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

[edit] Category:British Cultural Icons

Hello, wub. I have contributed to both Buckingham Palace and Trooping the Colour. I see that on both of these you recently removed the Category:British cultural icons with AWB, citing CFD. Relatively new to Wikipedia, I confine my activities to writing and the odd merge, and was unaware of this. Can you tell me what has happened to this popular and useful category? Has it been deleted? Or has it been merged? What has happened to the many articles which were under this category?

I will watchlist this page and check back here for an answer or would be grateful to hear from you on User talk:FClef

I am copying this note to the Help Desk and to a couple of Wikifriends more experienced than I, to see if they know what the fate of this category is. Best wishes. -- FClef (talk) 20:10, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi FClef. It was decided to delete this category along with a number of other related ones, at Categories for discussion. The specific discussion is located here. A notice of the discussion was placed on the category page, sorry if you missed it. I myself had nothing to do with the decision, I was simply clearing out some of the backlog of categories to be deleted. Don't worry, the articles that were in the category won't be affected!
As a fellow Brit, I have to admit I had something of a soft spot for this particular category. I happened to save a list of the articles that were in it since I figured they might be ones I was interested in editing (if I get time!). I've posted the list at User:The wub/British cultural icons if you want to take a look. Hope this helps! the wub "?!" 20:39, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bonk!

You made a mistake. In the MediaWiki namespace. And it stayed that way for 15 days. And the previous edit to the page was a self-reversion by User:Angela of the exact same mistake you made. Please don't do this in the future. Please always review the history of the any MediaWiki pages you edit. Please have a good day. (And, please pardon my scarcasm - it's too late at night, and I just spent way too long trying to find the specific MediaWiki page that got borked up.) [edit] Wikipedia:Categories for discussion

Hi The wub. I had a question. I noticed a while back that you moved Wikipedia:Categories for deletion to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion, but every sub-page, even the most recent ones, for the closed discussions are still listed as a "deletion" instead of "discussion" (e.g. Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 August 27). Hey there! My bot account User:Sagabot was approved yesterday to run AWB, but its name isn't on the AWB checkist - and so I can't use it. Would you mind adding it under the Bot section? [edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

[edit] Diane Farrell article (why it should be undeleted)

Following on from our IRC chat...

http://www.farrellforcongress.com/news/index.html is the "official" page that lists some of the major media coverage that Diane Farrell has received, which would indicate that she is newsworthy. The basic point is, she is the major party candidate in one of the most-watched races in the US. Wouldn't it be embarrassing to wake up on November 8, find that she's been elected to Congress and that the balance of power in the US has radically shifted as a result, and to NOT have an existing article in Wikipedia because 11 people decided that she wasn't newsworthy enough in July?

So, aside from the Connecticut newspapers and television stations(which we think are significant in these parts - the Hartford Courant is one of the top 50 papers in the US), some of Farrell's recent media appearances include:

Hardball with Chris Matthews, a (lame) nationally-broadcast news show
The Hill, a Washington, DC political publication
The Washington Post
Newsweek
ABC News (national, not just local)
Human Events Online
Time Magazine
The New York Times (although for CT-4 that's a local paper)
The Financial Times, a UK/ international paper
The Los Angeles Times
US News and World Report
Roll Call (a DC publication)
CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer

We are now one month from the election, so the rate of coverage is going to become much more intense. This is "one to watch," so it would be bizarre were it to be blacklisted from Wikipedia at this moment. Malangali 18:34, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Also, via YouTube, was a long segment on the Jim Lehrer News Hour (national nightly news broadcast) Malangali 20:23, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Looks good, I've restored the article. Sorry I didn't get round to this earlier. Now it could use some expansion, and adding the evidence of notability. The Financial Times is particularly good (and what convinced me) since it is international. Also if you check the history there is the original version that was deleted, which might be helpful - [4]. I'll help out if I have time, but I'm pretty busy at the moment, and as I said I know very little about US politics. the wub "?!" 13:21, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Current events link edit

Your edit here: [5] substantially changes the attribution of the elements of the event. The ESPN link was, at the time that it was added, the only article that I'm aware of that was reporting that Lidle was actually in the plane and died in the crash. While I'm sure the other articles have since been updated to reflect this information, the attribution implies what elements of our coverage were sourced from which sites. I appreciate your adding the ESPN piping, though. -Harmil 12:34, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

I did think it must be something like that. However I've never seen individual elements of a story being attributed separately on Current events before, so was just going with normal practice and making the page look consistent. It seems somewhat moot now that other sources are reporting the same thing. the wub "?!" 12:39, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of Category

I see you're deleting the category:pro-choice politicians (per CFD). I'm assuming a consensus has been reached on that subject. Will you also be removing category:pro-life politicians, for the same reason? It appears you have not done so yet. Appraiser 22:43, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Definitely - see Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 October 8#Category:Pro-choice politicians / Category:Pro-life politicians. Though I probably won't do it myself, I'll leave it and the rest of pro-choice to a bot. I thought I'd make a start on the removals but the servers are playing up and slowing me down. the wub "?!" 22:50, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recat not needed

Hi, I see you are recategorizing Occupations by nationality and Nationalities by occupation. All of these have already been recategorized by changing the template. Some categories are duplicated. Instead of changing these to the new category name, it would be better to remove the duplication since it is handled by the template. -- Samuel Wantman 19:39, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

D'oh! That would be much more sensible. I was confused the first time around since I didn't realise the templates were categorising as well. the wub "?!" 19:50, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

While you are at it, you could remove the people category as well, (like "Persian people"). This is also redundant, and is often piped incorrectly. -- Samuel Wantman

Will do, but it'll have to wait. Somthing's come up, I'll finish this off later tonight or tomorrow. the wub "?!" 20:02, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:UW

Hi The Wub,

I see looking at the WikiProject user warnings page, that you are a participant in this project. I have recently started an undertaking to harmonise all user page warnings and templates. For this I would like your assistance. I have listed a number of ideas on the project template page here as a first draft. I fully appreciate that as with most editors and admins, that you are fairly busy. Therefore I am not looking for anyone to carry out the actual work, I am willing to do that myself, with help from a number of other RC Patrollers who have come forward. But what I am looking for is your invaluable input, on the draft ideas and also to suggest other ways you believe we may improve the templates. I do however require the services of a couple of administrators to put into effect some of the new templates, as they are currently protected. Please take 5 mins to look through the new templates page, and both the project and templates talk pages and leave any ideas or suggestions that you may have. [edit] Stampede Wrestling alumni category

It was up for deletion and thus deleted. But there is no point in putting past Stampede Wrestling stars in the roster category unless they are actively working for Stampede Wrestling. I feel that you might as well put all alumni pages of all promotions in the their roster category if you are going to do it for one. The alumni page serves as a purpose of telling people who has worked for Stampede Wrestling in the past. Alumni pages are very useful things to have. The sooner people learn that the better. Mr. C.C. 20:45, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (categories)#Occupation - specifically:
  • Occupation categories should not be divided into "current" or "former" categories. For example, Category:Former child actors and Category:Current Minnesota Twins players should not exist.

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.

  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!

[edit] Activity on Talk:Mordecai Richler

As an experienced Wikipedia user with an interest in the topic, would you be kind enough to look into the recent activity on the Talk:Mordecai Richler page? My claim is that Lance made a threat to wholesale delete a section of the article, attempting to hold us hostage to accomplish a goal of his (which I sympathize with though I have not said so), and then he posted to the Talk page the complete text of a copyrighted magazine article and reverted it several times when an editor and I removed it. I think he is relatively new, and hope that a word or two may have a calming effect. Hu 00:26, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't exactly say I have an interest in the topic, in fact it's about as far outside my areas of expertise as you could get! I only edited the page once, to recategorise it after a decision at CFD. Looks like things have calmed down now, and Bearcat has done a good job. I do not understand your category removal for Template:Cyber Girl of the Year, but you seem to be citing a policy from CFD that I can not find. I was not referring to a particular policy, but to a WP:CFD discussion, specifically the one found at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 November 14#Category:Playboy models. [edit] Clerk for Requests for Checkuser

Hey The wub,

I am messaging you to ask whether you would be interested in reassuming your role as a Request for Checkuser clerk. Currently, the clerk duties are being shared among three experienced clerks, and we have added two new clerks, who are currently in the learning stage. We are currently experiencing backlogs and long waiting times for some actions to occur.

As you are currently listed under "inactive" on our clerk roster, we're asking that if you are willing to resume these clerk activities, please leave a message on my user talk page (quick link). A number of things have changed, so we reccommend re-reading Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks/Guide. The guide is currently being rewritten, but the new and updated version should be available by 00:00 December 12, 2006 (UTC) at the latest.

If you aren't interested in being a checkuser clerk any longer, we accept your decision and thank you for your service; it would be greatly appreciated if you'd leave me a note that you're no longer interested. If you would like to resume your role in the future, but can't do so now, please mention so on my talk page, and I'll note this on our clerk register.

Thanks for your cooperation,

[edit] Query

Hi there! I was wondering why you considered the CFD on Category:Episodic games to have no consensus, considering there were no objections after several weeks and the one comment said "I have no particular comment, though, on whether or not the category is useful. I'm just explaining what the category is presumably referring to." Sorry to bother you with this but I'm curious after your reasoning. Yours, (Radiant) 14:08, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

From your nomination statement I wasn't sure whether you had understood the concept of Episodic games correctly, and you didn't reply to Dugwiki's clarification. Normally I don't have a problem with discussions that don't have much input but clearly aren't controversial (e.g. your later nomination of Category:Romance games and others). But in this case when there was a possible misunderstanding I thought it best to not delete. I probably should have made my rationale clearer when closing, but was a bit rushed trying to clear the CfD backlog we have had recently. the wub "?!" 14:44, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
No problem, thanks for explaining. It's good to see the backlog shrinking so swiftly. I suppose I might renominate the cat at some point for future discussion, but it's not an issue I feel strongly about. (Radiant) 15:42, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:UW

Hi,

You have put yourself as interested in helping out at WikiProject on user warnings. We are now at a stage where we are creating the new templates and are wondering if you are still interested? If so please visit the overview page and choose a warning type you wish to work on. There is a base template available here, which you can copy and use to get you started. Have a look through the redirects and see what old templates are affected and incorporate them into the the new system. Anyway, any questions please don't hesitate to give me a shout. [edit] New day transclude for WP:CFD

Hi there ... for the past few months I've been doing the new day transclude at WP:CFD. This isn't a big deal, since midnight UTC happens around 4pm my time. However, as of tomorrow morning I'm leaving on a trip for a couple of weeks, expect to be back on the 30th. I'll probably still be around from time to time, they have the internet, even in Denver ... but I don't think I'll be able to do the new date thing again until I return. And I thought I'd let a few people know in advance, so people aren't waiting around for me to do it, or wondering why I stopped. -- ProveIt (talk) 00:38, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Veteran categories

You have removed the veteran category from G>W. Bush and Larry Craig, which makes sense, since the were never in theater. But how do you justify removing it from Eisenhower? Could you please cite what standard you are following? Thanks. Edison 13:27, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

The categories have been disbanded, see Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 December 8#Category:American Veteran Politicians and Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 December 9#American veteran politicians. the wub "?!" 13:32, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Could you please cite that in the edit summaries, because otherwise people (like me) will just think it is vandalism. I immediately reverted your Eisenhower edit, so maybe you could cite the CfD and re-relete it. Thanks. Edison 13:34, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The abortion debate

Hi. I knew I was missing something when I relisted the abortion categories for renaming. The tags that you removed from those pages as a result of the withdrawn nomination were actually replacements I put up for the new discussion. Could you please put them back, or can I do that myself? Sorry for the trouble I'm causing you. Xiner 14:46, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

D'oh! Sorry, I'll put them back. the wub "?!" 14:47, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mornington Cresent

An experienced type like yourself should know not to vandalise the Mornington Cresent page. I just think it's just a shame there is no way to easily get people who do such things banned. Mrjeff 13:50, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Having your facts right might help, the only edit I made to Mornington Crescent recently (and as far as I can remember, ever) was this, a simple change of category as discussed at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 December 12#Category:I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. the wub "?!" 19:47, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Roman Catholic bishops in California

Hello. I think that you made a mistake by merging this category with American Roman Catholic bishops. Catholic bishops are organized by region. At least keep the list of bishops from California and make it a subcategory of American Catholic bishops so that readers can still get the California list.

I've added my comments to this discussion comments to this discussion.

Bishops organize themselves into regions, such as California, Illinois, and Ohio, and each region has a long history. By merging Catholic Bishops in California into a larger category of Catholic Bishops in America, you removed this. Now readers need to fish through Catholic Bishops in America which could have hundreds of entries of people from all over the country going back over 200 years. That's not very useful.

These decisions are made quickly on Wikipedia with a quick discussion of the form, not the content. For example I didn't read any discussion about the content of how bishops are organized. See list of the Roman Catholic dioceses of the United States for regions within the United States. This type of research should have been a part of making the decision.

I'd like to see this category restored or at least made a subcategory under American Catholic Bishops.

Thanks for reading.

[edit] Help with my Userpage

Hi there!

I am relatively new to Wikipedia, and I am starting to edit My Userpage. I was browsing through userpages to try to find some good material to add to mine, (such as userboxes - I just found out about "the great userbox war") and I found your page. I really liked the design of your page (the "bubbles"), and tried to copy it over to my userpage, but it didn't work the way i wanted. I am asking you because (1) it's on your page, and (2) you're an admin. How can I incorporate that design into my userpage, complete with the thing at the top (with my name and a few little icons)?

Thanks,

Iamzork 01:44, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi, glad you like my userpage! The code for the header is in a subpage - User:The wub/uptop. You can either

  • copy the code from there directly onto your user page
  • or copy it to a subpage e.g. User:Iamzork/uptop and then transclude it by putting {{User:Iamzork/uptop}} on your user page

and then make changes as you like. Experiment, and if you need any more help then just ask. I'll be interested to see what you come up with :-) the wub "?!" 22:53, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RE:Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Nintendude

Just for my own future reference, I take it from your move that it is customary to tack on new requests for CU onto the old namespace rather than start a second request page as is done with AfD's? This is my first multiple checkuser so it would be nice to know the correct protocol going forward. Thanks!--Isotope23 18:31, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Yep, that's how we tend to do it, and then use noinclude trickery to hide the old cases from the main page. This way we can keep related cases nicely together for future reference. Don't worry about making mistakes though, it took me a while to get my head around it (being so used to AfD), and I'm a clerk! the wub "?!" 18:35, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing this [Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/User:Greier]. Judging by Greier's background, don't you think this deserves a checkuser? I think it was rejected due to my mistake. Miskin 17:11, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

No, Jpgordon just said a checkuser was unnecessary given the evidence you presented i.e. it is obvious these are puppets. Declining to run a check based on lack of evidence is a different matter. I will block them now. the wub "?!" 17:23, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I see now. I have no prior experience in this matter, thank you for the explanation. Miskin 14:07, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Oh btw, he just created another sockpuppet of himself in User:!blardi. Is he consider formally banned? I'd like to enforce WP:BAN against him by reverting his edits. Miskin 15:11, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I think something is going wrong considering the Justinian article. People are frustratingly disagreeing on how to proceed. Would you be so kind as to take a look at it?' La Belle Aude 19:03, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Oh yeah, I would also like to bring up User:La Belle Aude as Greier's newest sock. He has apparently been watching my contribution list and claims that he doesn't even know how to make a revert yet. Miskin 20:29, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Please, be so kind as to tell me what I did wrong. I'm new to this, I've been editing away for a day now, but apparently, in spite of reading up on policy to avoid greenhorn mistakes, I have already enraged you. I have not reverted anything Greier has done, have I? And by the way, I'm a she. -- La Belle Aude 21:01, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Following this and an e-mail from Iblardi I have asked Jpgordon to consider running the Checkuser anyway, to clear things up. I would encourage all parties to take a break from the Justinian article for a while, there are plenty of other things to do around here. If the edit-warring continues I will not hesitate to protect. the wub "?!" 21:56, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Also Miskin please note that User:Stbalbach has been on Wikipedia since 2004, and is undoubtedly a user in good standing. As such he is clearly able to restore edits, as he is taking responsibility for them. the wub "?!" 22:03, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I was never suspecting Stbalbach, he thought I was removing content out of the blue until I explained myself to him. In any case, despite what CheckUser shows, I cannot be convinced that La Belle Aude, Mursili, Iblardi are not the socks of the same person. Suddenly three editors arrive, one after the other, and start edit-warring over the most insignificant edit in the world. Personally I feel that this guy overestimates his own potential by thinking that he can fool people like that. He claims that he doesn't even know how to make reverts [12] and suddenly after scanning my contribution list he appears in wub's talk page, knowing everything about CheckUser, wp:ban etc. Look how much he insists on restoring one sentence that I don't even remember what it was about [13][14][15]. Stbalbach advised him as Mursili that he shouldn't be a red user and have a good reputation so he came back with new blue user. How come those people who were so concerned over that line in Justinian were never there at the same time? Now I'm giving him ideas, you'll see that next time he'll try to operate more socks concurrently, thinking he can outsmart us. He's never going to admit being sockpuppet, he never did in the past, one time he tried to convince that he was the brother of someone who was banned. He'll always try to blame me of course, like that time when he started an RFC against me. I'll try to get the diffs although it was deleted. By now he's probably sending emails at admins, telling them about how innocent and victimised he has been. Miskin 22:39, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Oh right, I just discovered another remarkable anecdote, La Belle Aude claims to be from the Netherlands [16], just like user Iblardi had claimed [17] - all by mere coincidence of course. Suddenly he had a sex change, thinking for some reason that he'd have more chances to fool us as a female. He obviously doesn't intend to stop sockpuppeting and disrupting wikipedia, hence why I've been enforcing the reversion of his edits. Miskin 23:02, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Here are some diffs:

Miskin 23:27, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

the wub, thanks a lot for resolving this matter. Iblardi 14:18, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Wub you're making a mistake. Greier has prior history of editing with proxies [19], so this is by no means an evidence. This conversation shouldn't have taken place via emails but in wikipedia. It should have been open to all wikipedians, especially the editors who have had contacts with this user before. And what about "La belle aude" who mysteriously disappeared. No answer was ever given. Was there a CheckUser? What were the results? Miskin 17:54, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Would you be so kind as to keep me out of this, Miskin? I've replied to your email, you can run any kind of check on it you like. You make me feel very unwelcome on Wikipedia. I would prefer you'd answer my greenhorn-questions instead of ignoring my queries and start accusing me blindly of things I hitherto didn't even knew existed.

The Wub, I'll leave that page alone for a while and I'll start editing some other stuff, even though Justinian is a subject I feel most comfortable about. There is indeed plenty to do here for medievalists. La Belle Aude 10:26, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Military Veterans

Greetings,

Regarding the below discussion:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_February_2#Military_veterans

First, I believe this discussion should be re-opened for debate, as affected articles were NOT informed of the debate (and therefore were excluded from either voting or presenting an alternate view).

Second, I believe this is a bad nomination because it sacrifices content for alleged consistency, when in fact there IS no consistency. Consider:

1. "Veteran": In particular, most people who participate in a war (war veterans) do NOT consider it to be a career. Yes, part of the HONOR that comes with being a VETERAN is that one survived danger in an effort to defend their nation. Yes, the issue is about being a survivor. And in particular for aged veterans, surviving old age as well. For example, do we say Antonio Pierro was the last surviving military personnel of the Meuse-Argonne offensive? I think not.

2. References to specific wars: I could understand using 'military personnel' to refer to the category of all persons who ever served in the military (even though I disdain the term, as it blanches individuals of identity and the idea of serving of any value other than being a peon or robot). But for a specific category such as "American Veterans of WWI", isn't the category already linked to a specific idea and time period, one that cannot be associated with a career as a personnel of WWI.

3. Purposes of remembrance: Part of the purpose of remembering veterans is to remember their sacrifice and committment, and also to remember that war is generally a bad thing, and should be limited to a last resort scenario. "Military personnel" blanches the category of any meaning. Human resources personnel may be hired or fired with the rise and fall of the stock market, nothing personal. Do we remember the 'last surviving human resources personnel of the office of Dean Witter, 1985'? Everyone's been fired since then! NO. I think not.

The bottom line: the renaming of the categories was done in BAD FAITH since the affected parties were NOT informed of the debate.→ R Young {yakłtalk} 07:59, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

<sigh>What is it about the phrase "bad faith" that makes people throw it around so needlessly, even resorting to ALL CAPS? The affected parties were informed of the debate by tagging the category pages, as is standard practice for category renaming debates. Tagging every single article contained within those categories is completely impractical. Furthermore the rename was discussed by WikiProject Military history before even being proposed at CfD.
"Part of the purpose of remembering veterans is to remember their sacrifice and committment" From my perspective it seems you want to use these categories to espouse a point of view, which is against policy. the wub "?!" 12:51, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disagreement over closing of CfD on Category:Dutch world champions in sports as 'delete'

You closed that with a consensus determination of "delete", and I'm strongly curious as to why, since nominator and 50% of respondents supported rename, and stated reasons for this, while the other 50% of respondents supported merge, not delete, while nominator already pointed out that merge was moot, rendering their comments effectively meaningless. I believe this category should be restored, since there was certainly no consensus to delete, as Category:Dutch world champions in sport (no -s) — or at the original name and have it returned to CfD for further discussion, since there was not really any consensus to rename it either (in fact I would argue against the rename; regardless I'm arguing much more strongly against the deletion, which doesn't seem to actually be supported). I for one found the category sensible and was actually using it. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 03:01, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

In the interim, could I please have a copy of the category showing the categorized individuals as it was before deletion, at User:SMcCandlish/Dutch Temp (or something else, as long as I know where it is :) ? It strikes me as likely that because this was a subcat of Dutch sportspeople, that articles from which the champions cat was removed may not have been updated to use Dutch sportpeople instead, and are thus uncategorized or incompletely categorized. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 03:16, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
CfD is not a vote, and I believe this case was an acceptable use of 'closer discretion'. I basically did close it as merge for the reasons given by Otto4711 and in my closing statement. However all the member articles were in other appropriate subcategories of Category:Dutch sportspeople, so from a purely practical standpoint there was no reason to move all the articles into the top category, only to have to remove them all again later.
I have listed the articles that were removed from the category at User:SMcCandlish/Dutch Temp as requested. If you still feel my actions were inappropriate, you can bring it up at deletion review. the wub "?!" 19:21, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks; will make sure the articles are all catted right. DR: Eh. I'm not saying you abused admin power, I'm just disagreeing with your logic. Given the putsch to keep-and-rename and the rationale for those !votes, I think a simpler and more consensus-y thing to do would have been to remove any redundant cat.'s from the articles in question like Category:Dutch sportspeople, the same way one would remove Category:British sportspeople from an article that already had Category:Scottish sportspeople or Category:English sportspeople. I don't see any rationale for deleting the category itself, since it identified topics by significant (and non-overcategorization) facts. Not something really worth arguing about very much, since it's actually a larger issue of whether such world champ. categories should or shouldn't exist at all, which would be a larger topic for CfD. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 23:00, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
