Benjamin Franklin (17 tháng 01 1706 - 17 tháng 4 1790) là một trong những người thành lập đất nước nổi tiếng nhất của Hoa Kỳ. Ông là một chính trị gia, một nhà khoa học, một tác giả, một thợ in, một triết gia, một nhà phát minh, nhà hoạt động xã hội, một nhà ngoại giao hàng đầu. Trong lĩnh vực khoa học, ông là gương mặt điển hình của lịch sử vật lý vì những khám phá của ông và những lý thuyết về điện, ví dụ như các khám phá về hiện tượng sấm, sét. Với vài trò một chính trị gia và một nhà hoạt động xã hội, ông đã đưa ra ý tưởng về một nước Mỹ ^[1] và với vai trò một nhà ngoại giao trong thời kỳ Cách mạng Mỹ, ông đã làm cho liên minh là Pháp giúp đỡ để có thể giành độc lập.

Franklin nổi tiếng về sự ham hiểu biết của ông, về các tác phẩm của ông (có tính phổ biến, tính chính trị và khoa học) và tính đa dạng của các lĩnh vực mà ông quan tâm. Là một nhà lãnh đạo của Thời đại Khai Sáng, ông đã có được công nhận, ủng hộ của cả các nhà khoa học và giới trí thức khắp Châu Âu. Ông đã thành công trong việc bảo đảm về quân sự cũng như trợ giúp tài chính của Pháp là một đóng góp to lớn cho sự thắng lợi của cách mạng chống lại Anh. Ông cũng là người đã phát minh ra cột chống sét. Ông là người sớm đề xướng về sự thống nhất của các thuộc địa. Các nhà sử gia gọi ông là "Người Mỹ đầu tiên"

Sinh ra ở Boston, Massachusetts, Franklin đã học nghề in từ anh trai của ông và trở thành một chủ biên tập báo, một thọ in và một thương gia rất giầu có ở Philadelphia. Ông đã có nhiều năm sống ở Anh và xuất bản ấn phẩm nổi tiếng Poor Richard's Almanac (Alamac của Richard nghèo) và ấn phẩm Pennsylvania Gazette (công báo Pennsylvania).

1. "TEMPERANCE. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation."
2. "SILENCE. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation."
3. "ORDER. Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time."
4. "RESOLUTION. Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve."
5. "FRUGALITY. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing."
6. "INDUSTRY. Lose no time; be always employ'd in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions."
7. "SINCERITY. Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly."
8. "JUSTICE. Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty."
9. "MODERATION. Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve."
10. "CLEANLINESS. Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, cloaths, or habitation."
11. "TRANQUILLITY. Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable."
12. "CHASTITY. Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation."
13. "HUMILITY. Imitate Jesus and Socrates."
