[edit] Plot
SpongeBob is dreaming that it is raining Krabby patties, then wakes up to find that he is eating his pillow. He decides to get a midnight snack, a sea-nut butter and jellyfish jelly sandwich, but then he falls asleep forgetting to close the fridge. When he wakes up, he finds that everything is frozen. Then, he finds out that he has the suds (an underwater flu). Instead of sneezing, bubbles are coming out of his holes. He says that he's not sick and tries to go to work, but Mr. Krabs says that he's too sick. He is excused. The suds get worse when he gets back home. So, he calls Sandy and asks her to take him to the doctor. Then Patrick comes over and asks him if he is going skiing. He says that he is sick and he is going to the doctor. Patrick says that the doctor's office is a horrible place. SpongeBob is terrified of going to the doctor, and changes his mind about it. Patrick becomes SpongeBob's doctor and puts corks all over his holes so bubbles won't come out. Then SpongeBob says that his treatment is working and then calls Sandy (Patrick ended up calling her since Spongebob's finger was too big and pressed multiple buttons at once)and tells her not to come, but a little while later, Sandy arrives and Patrick says that SpongeBob is fine and doesn't need to go to the doctor. But SpongeBob is so sick he kills all the clams. SpongeBob (who is a ball now) is rolling toward the Krusty Krab and the bubbles get higher and higher and the corks come off and tear down the Krusty Krab. Then he goes to the doctor and Dr. Gill Gillium asks SpongeBob if he is ready for his treatment, and a human hand named Hans grabs him and gives him a special treatment which involves using him like a real sponge. When he is finished, Hans gives SpongeBob a giant lollipop. Patrick is jealous of SpongeBob's lollipop and takes a bubble wand out of his pocket and blows a bubble then quickly puts it back. Then, he says that he has the suds and the doctorfish says that they have a very special treatment for him. Then, Hans takes Patrick and gives him a bad treatment which was being rubbed against a cactus and scrubbing a toilet.
[edit] Quotes
- SpongeBob: Sandy, I think you'd better take me to the doctor...
- Sandy: Okay, SpongeBob. I'll be there faster than a barefoot jackrabbit on a hot greasy griddle in the middle of August.
- Sandy: Don't you worry, Patrick, I'll be over there faster than a barefoot jackrabbit on a hot greasy griddle in the--
- Patrick: Yeah, yeah! The rabbit! Don't bother coming over here Sandy!
[edit] Trivia
- This episode is a reference to the 1920 film with the same name.
- It is actually illegal and against the law to impersonate a doctor like Patrick did; if the police catch you they will put you in jail.
- This episode is a reference to the Drake & Josh episode "Paging Dr. Drake" when Drake imersonated a doctor because of cute Nurses.
- The fridge was left open, freezing SpongeBob's entire pineapple house. However, this would actually heat the house, as the heat removed from the inside of the refrigerator is released out the back, along with the extra heat from the motor.
- Many people think the suds are a spoof or an underwater version of the common cold, as coined by SpongeBob himself in the episode, but series creator Stephen Hillenburg has reportedly said it is actually an underwater version of the flu.
- "Old Magazines" are possibly out-of-date magazines, but Patrick seems to have a fear for them.
- The music we hear throughout the episode is Tchaikovsky's "Dance of The Sugar-Plum Fairy" from "The Nutcracker."
- When Sandy tells SpongeBob to open his mouth to prove he's unwell and his breath smells bad, it goes to Patrick who has a closepin on his face where his nose might be. But in the episode "Something Smells", Patrick seemed to have no problem with SpongeBob's bad breath caused by the peanut-onion-ketchup sundae.
- The man taking a shower during the live-action "sponge treatment" scenes is Tom Kenny, who provides the voice of SpongeBob.
- This episode is famous for Patrick's "Help! I'm shrinking!" scene.
- There is a common quote between this episode and a Zoey 101 episode. In the episode where Chase tries to find out what Zoey said about him on her DVD in a time capsule unopened for 70 years in the future, he asked Michael to help him dig up the capsule. When Chase feels sorry, he asked Michael if it was OK to see it. Michael says "Michael's not here at the moment, please leave a message after the beep. Beep." Patrick said a similar line when Sandy asked him where SpongeBob is. Patrick said "He is not here at the moment. Please leave a message after the beep. Beep."
- This is the first of three times the title card text is written in bubbles. The second is Bubble Buddy and third in Gary Takes a Bath.
