[edit] Geography
The countries that are next to India are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar (old name: Burma), China, Bhutan, and Nepal. It is also near Sri Lanka, an island country.
India is a peninsula, because it is surrounded on three sides by the Indian Ocean. The part of the Indian Ocean on India's west side is called the Arabian Sea. The part of the Indian Ocean on India's east side is called the Bay of Bengal. The northern part of India has many mountains. The most famous mountains in India are the Himalayas, which has the tallest mountains in the world. Many rivers are in India. The biggest and most important rivers are the Ganges and the Brahmaputra.
India mainly has a tropical climate, which means it can get very hot in summer and cool in winter. The northern part, though, has a cooler climate, almost temperate. The Himalayas can get extremely cold, though. There is very heavy rainfall along the west coast and in the Eastern Himalayan foothills. The west is drier. All of India gets rain for four months of the year called the monsoon. When the monsoon rains don't come, drought is common and leaves many people starving.
The South Indians are mainly of Dravidian origin and the North Indians are of Aryan origin. Some people think that Aryans came from Europe a long time ago, but there is not enough proof to be sure. Many people are a mix of these two races. There are also some tribes that are similar to Aboriginal people of Australia.
